Decided to go out this afternoon to try and redeem myself after last week’s skunk at the HOW tourney. Started throwing live and cut bait into the grass line. I could hear the reds crashing hard in the grass, so I just set up and waited. Nothing! Moved to a couple spots with still no hits. Decided to break open a live crab I had pulled into the yak. I did feel some gratification taking off the claws of that devil after he charged me on the yak! Tossed out both halves and immediately had a hit on one, but no hook. A minute later my other reel went off slowly, stopped, then starting ripping the line off! A few minutes of fighting in the grass I finally pulled in a nice 27". Oysters started to show so decided to high tail it out before I spent the afternoon stuck. Hopefully the guys in the flats boat decided to leave as well, but I think it was a little late for them!

Nice Red! Told you the crabs were the ticket. My 1st break off today was on a crab and he rolled right thru 30lbs braided/leader without a second thought. Probably slowed down around Beaufort, as he was haulin spot tail. Thinking the guys in the stink pot may have gotten stuck, seeing as it sounds like you passed them in the way in. Oops.

Good example of SKUNKING HARDER!!!(for anyone who read that article in the Kayak fishing magazine a while back…I think Too Busy has a copy of that issue framed) Talk to friends, analyze what you did and how they did things different, go catch fish! I don’t even think TB2 knows that he can fish with shrimp, Hadens, FM’s, etc.
How’d I get dragged into this? I use what ever I have available including shrimp, Hadens, FM’s, blue crab (see post above), etc. Even started to dabble in the fine art of throwing plastic, with no success…yet. May have to get pointers from Tommy and Carter and others.

i used to have the same problem with crab and not being able to hook them. i realized i was using too big of a piece of crab. now i try to get 3 pieces of bait from each half of the crab. works well, and the fish dont mind the small size of the bait. nice fish
