Gonna dust off the fly rod this weekend and give it a go. What pattern/color clousers have you guys been getting the reds on and what other type flies.
olive/ white or black clousers have always worked good for me this time of year. sand eel flies w/ small hooks ment for stripers have always seemed to bring out the best of the bass for me lately. a small (no2) needlefish fly about 4 inches will have them going ballistic. I put a pic. of it up a few weeks ago.
Tie some weighted flys up in the warmer and more natural hues like Browns, Blacks, & Olives along with Purple, Red, Pink, Chartreuse and Orange. I’ve cought both Reds & Trout on these combinaitns throughout the cooler months. A good general rule to follow is the clearer and cleaner the water, the lighter and brighter your patterns can be. When the water gets off colored and mucked up by a big blow or run off, switch off to darker or hotter colors as well as use baits that have a bit more flash and sound that will push some water. You can also scale down the size and mass of your offering when it’s super clear and the fish are heavily pressured. The next time that you get on a nice school that don’t want to play, switch off to something that’s at the opposit end of the style and color spectrum that you started with and see if this will get you some looks, if that don’t work then go find some happier less pressured fish and try it again!
I read once that the best flies are simple flies and that if you are using more than three materials to tie the fly it is probably too complicated. That being said, I do tie some more complicated patterns but the ones that I really like in my box are the simple ones. A little craft fur, a little chenille, a little deer hair. Maybe a little sprinkle of Krystal Flash but that’s it.
You definately don’t want to over do the flash this time of year! If you look at most of the flies that Borski designs, he’s utilizes the same basic stuff and tries to keeps things simple. A little Craft Fur, Rabbit and or Deer Hair, with some Hackle and a touch of Crystal Flash or Estaz and his is fishin. Short, Sweet and man does his stuff catch fish!
def. , I trimmed some flash from a woolheaded crab/toad underbelly last week and immediately hooked up. finally after 1/2 dozen shots, duh, a quick snip busted em big:face_with_head_bandage:
It’s weird sometimes they like the flash and sometimes they don’t… go figure. It’s got to where I tie most of patterns two different ways, one with flash and one without.
