Fellow fishermen.
I have been doing pretty well this year with the fish. I have been pretty consistent on largemouth in freshwater and sheephead, flounder, trout and reds in salt. For the largemouth, flounder and trout I know what artificials to use and how to work them. I don’t seem to have any luck with the reds on artificial (even when I know that they are there because I’m catching them on muds). So what do you think? Change my lure retrieve? Change my lures? Slow drag the bottom like I’m fishing for flounder or fast in the mid to upper water column like trout?
I typically fish: bass assissin jerk baits, Z-man jerk baits, DOA, and squiggly tail grubs.
Thanks
Especially as the water heads up and dirties with algae, try using the scented Zman baits, Gulp baits, or add ProCure to your other soft plastics. Jig them slowly across the bottom near structure. This will help your pursuit of reds on arties…

I rarely use artificials other than topwater plugs and DOA shrimp for reds. Fish the plugs at low light and cover water. DOA rest of time. When using DOA short, quick jerks with rod pointed at bait work best. Make sure lure sinks on a SLACK line between twitches, allowing DOA to slowly spiral toward bottom. When it hits bottom repeat. 99% bites occur on while sinking. Use golden bream, morning glory and glow/gold rush colors. Good Luck!!

The Gulp! 3" Natural Shrimp, and 3" Swimming Mullet in Smoke Metalflake color fished on a 1/4 or 3/8 oz. red lead head jig have caught many limits of redfish for us (including the one in my signature photo)…as well as some huge over slot fish in the Cooper, Wando, and in the Harbor. Some days we have caught live mullet and menhaden but found that the fish wanted the Gulp more than the live bait. You normally work these slowly across the bottom, but you can use the swimming mullet like you would a crank bait and it will draw strikes from trout when used this way. Both will catch reds and have worked consistently for us. These lures have proven so consistent for us that we rarely even worry about live bait. Besides, it is somehow more fun to catch them on artificials.
