Wind wouldnt allow me to do what I wanted, so plan b. Caught 2 nice trout and 2 reds on the fly. Reds were cruising the banks and were caught in 6" of water. Love the fly rod! would not have caught those fish on spin tackle.
Rad, These fish were spooked. Just off the oyster bed they were running down is soupy mud and they were less than a ft off the bank. Anything heavy enough to get there would have stuck in the mud. Started throwing the larger patterns and the redfish would look, but not eat. Trout didnt care, after they tore up 2 flies I moved on.
Cracker. I wanted to sight fish with the fly rod. My reference was to the particular fish I was seeing.

I got ya Any fish you catch on a fly is a good one. I suck with a flyrod, myself The only reds I catch on a fly are when I rig a clouser on a dropper behind a jig.
All the fish we caught yesterday were deep, 15-20 feet. Didn’t see any shallow.

10/4, but I think a weightless Gulp! shrimp would have snagged a few IMO.

I guess I should have said I threw plastics on jigs, plastic weightless, jigs tipped with minnows and weightless minnows for about 2 hours and nada. Went to fly rod after 2 fish turned noses up at weightless minnow that was right in fro t of their face. Those fish were tailing in 4" if water. Started throwing clousers with a 1 hook and made some fish look, went to 2 hook with less fur as well and I started getting bit. Plan was to throw fly rod, wind made me second guess and led me to throw natutals and artificials until I saw they weren’t working and went back to the fly rod.
Still gotta stand by what I said earlier, I could not have caught those fish on spin tackle #128526;

Nice Video Chip. I was quick to put down the fly rod when the wind was blowing. Seemed like every time I planned to go after them on the fly the wind would blow. Now it seems every time I go fishing the wind blows Rad, I know you could probably find a way to get those fish to eat, but keep in mind most of us don’t get the amount of water time you do. I am not sure the fish get as much water time as you:smiley: and yes I am just a bit jealous as I sit here in my office typing this.
The intent of my initial comment was not to discredit your statement in any way. You most likely were 100% correct in that particular situation as you have described using other methods with no success. I have been burned numerous times making “blanket” assumptions on techniques/lures in which I believe fish will respond or not in certain situations. That is the value of fishing against other very experienced fishermen on the same days under the same conditions, and lots of times, fishing the same schools. I have seen some very “off the wall” lures, techniques, and presentations that have kicked my a$$ right behind me on the same flats. It’s a very humbling experience. Unless YOU ARE the fish, you can never know all about what will draw a strike and what won’t. That’s what keeps this sport interesting.

Actually Rad, I’ll take my statement back. About the only thing I didnt throw was a white 2" shrimp. I’ll have to add a pack to my bag.

True ^^ I have experienced times when reds are keyed in on grass shrimp and nothing on a spinner would work (at my skill level, anyway), but if I tied on a 1.5 in clouser on a fly rod it was taken readily. A spinning reel simply cannot deliver that size/weight lure to the target. IMO that is where a fly rod becomes a key tool in a fishermans tool box. Also, to deliver a near weightless fly to schooled reds on the flat without spooking them.
