Reds at marker 55

Left my dock at 7:15 and headed to a spot that holds reds.Set out 3 lines with cut crab.10 minutes later a big hit on a rod and a break off??? % minutes later another big hit and a 23 incher comes in.Went to take a go pro pic and the batt is dead??? next up a monster hit red looked like 40 ./Again break off.I guess my anchor puller does not know how to tie PP line.5 hits 4 break offs and 1 red.Went to another spot and it was loaded with bait.2 small trout and several dink hits.called it a day and came home.

Went out yesterday fished high tide with half and whole crab on popping cork by oyster shelve and grass and saw a for foot shark come out of the water and nearly on the bank it hit the crab so hard but missed the hook but came back instantly and got it on the second shot ten ft from the boat and straightened out the clip on a 45# leader after a brief but powerful burst. I then moved and fished a hole on the others side of mud hump by the grass edge in the middle of smaller creek and got a hit almost as soon as my line hit the water, dragged screamed and line popped, I had a third hit on a whole Croaker and you guessed it ying pow. Like they say three strikes and your out so I went in.

stono, a buddy and I got out yesterday in the stono and went to a spot that’s always good to us. well it was too good, in fact we weren’t prepared for bull reds tearing us a new one and sending us home with our tails between our legs after not being able to get them all the way in. so yes, definitely experienced unexpected big ones yesterday. I was just hoping for anything slot size to low 30’s… caught them the first few hours of out going on cut mullet. going again late tomorrow more prepared. plus I didn’t realize I had circle sets and not plain circle hooks… that caused me to wonder why 2 huge hits resulted in no hook up. that’s when my buddy realized a mistake that i’d learned before (just didn’t think I’d do the same (**() thing again!).

thanks for the report. by the way, I’ve gone to marker 55 in the past off your advice and no luck. guess i’m not holding my mouth right. meanwhile, hope all is well health wise. may not have responded when you let on you had some problems but definitely following and hope all is good… especially someone who offers to take perfect strangers fishing. you’re a good dude,.

Good job finding the fish, Joe. Sorry about the break-offs…

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

After seeing how tightly a double-looped palomar knot can hold 10-pound Power Pro when I snagged a small gator at Bushy, I’m sold. I’ll never tie anything but a double-looped palomar (the version of the palomar they show in their booklet that comes with a spool).

A mile marker on the stono river. Good fish Mr. Joe, sorry to hear about all the breakoffs

Not on my rig.Josh lost 4.One was a beast. You better know how to tie PP to leaders and swivels the correct way.

Glad to hear that the action is picking up on the Stono!

Haha…it will be easy to spot today…there will be a dozen or so boats there;).
At least you got out on a nice day joe. Our ride from the folly inlet was a little sloppy early morning but settled later on. We fished early morning for shark…yeah…Donnie hates me for that…and had some "break offs"too…but don’t think it was swivel tying …we were near some rough bottom and those fish are smart! One I’m sure was a huge stingray…you know…the run…suck to the ottom…run…suck to the bottom… That went on for 15 minutes then it was gone. I hate leaving line in a fish…but didn’t lose much…and hope they will be ok. Had a shark puke on Donnie…:imp::smiley:…ok…so I did chuckle a little. On the water early morning. …off the water a t4pm…long day…chilling today and let the party people play…out again tommorow

Cleaned all the compartments on the new rig.Boats get dirty fast when you throw a net for bait.I am never going to throw a net off the boat again.LOL

Hey, Joe! Didn’t know you had a new ride. Please describe and thanks for the report and all the trips in the past.

where is marker 55 , cant find it on my chart

the only thing I’ve caught at marker 55 is about 2 dozen stingrays and a couple of whiting… oh, and lost an anchor there last fall…

'bout time

Go at dead low tide and scan the area. That whole area is loaded with reds.I was fishing one time and doing great and this guy comes up full throttle cuts the motor and his buddy slings a chain loaded anchor in.What the hell did he expect to be in that area after that? I saw the pushes head towards me.You have to run the ICW slow and look. You see a push ease up from where you saw the push and anchor fast and quiet.Learn a mullet push from a redfish push.Tie secure knots, use the right bait, keep quiet.Have patience. Most of all look, look, look. You see no Redfish sign move away slow and still look, look, look.I have sat in a spot 30 minutes saw nothing cranked up the motor and the whole area around me explodes with running fish??Never leave a baited rod just laying around.put it in a rod holder.

“Never leave a baited rod just laying around.put it in a rod holder”

It’s funny how often I broke that common sense rule until “it” happened. Wish I had that on video. Well joe, only picked up one yesterday.

Redfish Matt:

I started tying a double palomar, as well. Just curious what you (and anyone else) mean when you say double palomar. Some of the proponents on the web mean the double line/loop twice through the hook/swivel eye, others mean once through the eye but twice around on the overhand knot. I do it the second way but a friend claimed the double through the eye was correct.

Good advise from Stonoman. Also, if you are fishing a spot, alway look down the bank often…listen too. Lots a times I will fish in an area that generally has fish, but adjust position based on what is going on along the bank. This is a great way to fish a line of docks. Reds will often bounce between a two or three docks.

Even on a flat its amazing what you see when you just stop and be quiet and look around you. When I first started fishing I would toss my anchor and chain and wonder why no fish. I’ve since learned some things. Always good advice from the legendary Stonoman!
