Reds on artificials

Got invited to fish with work buddy today. Started the morning throwing plastics, a first for me. I was using a soft plastic rigged weedless and he was using a spinner bait with a chug tail. We worked our way up a creek at dawn getting a few hits on the way in. We anchored for a bit to wait for the tide to get right. Not much action until we started to head out. Threw my lure at a grass point and… WAAAM! Fish on. Great fight and landed a 25" red. My first on plastics and my biggest red to date. We kept easing out of the creek and I kept casting and working. Saw a spot that looked like it had to have a fish in it, threw to it and BOOOM! Fish on. Get him to the boat and it was a 24" red. Hit a few other spots as we hit dead low tide, got about another dozen rat reds and some croakers. Ended the day fishing for black sea bass in the harbor. In about 30 mins we caught another dozen or so. All fish released to catch another day. What a great time, and looks like I’m hooked on artificials now. (Pun intended)

Way to go, that’s a sure fired way to get hooked (pun intended). It took me a while to get the hang of arificials but a friend urged me to try them and after you catch a couple, your confidence grows…still not as good as I want to be but better than I used to be. Still not as easy as throwing live bait on a hook but, actually a little more fun since you have to work it.

Great job fish whistler. Did you call them in with your whistle?

No left it at home lol. My grandfather gave me that nick name, when I was young. He would take me fishing and I would get board and start whistling songs. About that time I would hook one. When the bite would get slow he’d say “whistle 'em boy, you’re the fish whistler ain’tcha” Good memories… he started me fishing when I was about 3.

Nice catch! Today was a good day even with some not so good wind!

Awesome job brother! You come into haddrells all the time on Sundays, missed ya this morning hahah. Try some of that Zman stuff paddlerZ minnowZ or the new PogyZ and DieZel minnowZ. The Houdini, redbone, goldrush, and bad shad/mulletron are killer. Artificials are by far my favorite way to fish, and I only throw Zman soft plastics. Why catch 1 red per bait when you can get 20?

I agree but would add smokey shad and pen fish to the list.
