Reds on the flats...

J.R., Mitch,

So during this time you can find the fish but have trouble getting them to eat? Or is it hard to even find the fish at all? What do y’all think causes the fishing to slow down during these few weeks? I’m hoping to set up a charter the 2nd week of April and want to know what to expect…

without question the toughest time of the year for me. one day we’ll catch 20 reds and then next struggle to get 2. it doesn’t seem to get get consistent until late may. but when the little menhaden get here the next few weeks, the bite will be great. agree with last poster though the last few trips have been great. the bigger fish have been eating muds, crab, and fresh cut mullet. we did really well on saturday and monday.

I think that during this time period they are mostly feeding on glass minnows. When they start acting like that I pull out a white gulp shrimp and filet it long ways into 4 thin sections, then trim a piece to the length of a glass minnow. Put it on the smallest jig head you have, like a 1/16 freshwater beetlespin jig. They will often bite that in the spring when they won’t touch anything else.

Little Beetle Spin works sometimes…but you really have to pay attention to the drag or the hook will straighten out.

Black Bart…No one knows what will happen from day to day. Like JR said, 20 one day and 2 the next. I have had 50+ one day and 0 the next…same location, same tide, same conditions, same everything.

Most extreme I have seen in a long time was the Red-Trout in October. We caught fish steady for 1.5 days…1 here, 2 there and so on. 2 hours before lines out we caught over 40 fish with 25 or so over the tourney slot…If only we had found that school first thing on the first day…left them biting to go weigh in.

I gotcha’, captain. That’s why they call it fishing. I’ll be in touch with you in the next few days.
