Reds on the ICW

Pay attention you Novice Red hunters. On the ICW cut your engine and drift and look at the grass line. When you see a push.( Reds moving around)go past the area and anchor real quiet.Put some lines out right at the grass edge and sit back and shut up.Preset your drag to about 2-5 pounds and leave the rod in the rod holder.Use circle hooks with crab, live mullet, minnows, dead bait.Keep the line tight!!!You will not gut hook a red with a tight line.Do not set the hook with a circle just pick it up and start winding it in.Look for long runs to deep water and action around your prop and anchor rope.If you do not want to clean and eat the fish put it back.:stuck_out_tongue:Take a pic and return the fish asap.Make sure it is revived before you let it go.Fish docks, any structure you can fish and obey the rules.Good fishing!!!

Thanks Joe, sounds like good advice!

pure gold stono. it works.

Good advice Joe. Last weekend we messed with some reds that were running up and down a 200 yd section of docks on the ICW (Stono). I do essentially the same thing, but I have spots that I know fish are going to be there like clock work. Cut the engine and drift into postion. Using a powerpole or pin anchor is almost required to stay quiet. Be patient and quiet and look for swirls, pushes, and bait popping. Usually a well placed live bait doesn’t last long when casted into the vicinity of the surface disturbance.

Thanks for posting that, Joe. Shows how much you enjoy fishing that you’d post such sound advice for others enjoyment. First class!

The area from marker 51 (My creek) to marker 57 holds plenty of redfish. When the tide turns just look at the area while drifting. You will see pushes.now getting them to bite sometimes is a problem.I have had schools of 20-30 all around my boat and they would not hit squat.Usually they follow a lead bull or big sow.I have seen 40 pounders.Don pulled in a 40 pounder years ago.
