Reds with corks

I have caught 2 reds with corks in their mouths in the last 2 months. I don’t know if they are legitimate break offs or if people are catching reds, putting a hooked cork in their mouth so they can find schools. I have heard of doing this and if it was intentional that is pretty weak.
STOP and find the fish by fishing.

Amen brother! That’s nothing but wrong!

Only tournament fisherman do that.

i’m glad you found my “corks”, would you mind giving them back? I was able to trail the school for a while until the tide got up and i lost track of those marked fish.

I lost 3 corks last week!!! Usually due to oysters cutting line…But the reds were so hungry that they were hitting and mouthing the corks(red and white)…Only hooked one when cork was taken but suspect it was a “pal” of his close by that took the cut mullet…

Now is the best time to get reds on the grasslines above oysters…WHY??? They are bathing in the shallow mudflats during low tide to avoid predators, rest, and get some sun…Then when the tide comes in they are searching the edges close to their “rest” area for bait which is scarce now…The white bottom of a cork probably resembles the underbelly of a mullet…

So much for the tracking conspiracy.I absolutely LOVE red fishing!!! Still think the limits should be six per person between 12 and 27 inches…They are everywhere out there!!!

I heard only those friggin’ guides do that.

I know it wasn’t me if the hook was in the mouth. I always put the hook in his back when tracking schools.

Those are some pretty good and scary responses, Thanks.

put the hook thru both lips, that way you won’t catch that one again.Normally reserve this technique for fish not in the slot.

I will have to definitely remember this technique when I go scouting for the next tournament. It makes more sense than using a 8/0 stainless steel hook through the back.

We always try to retrieve our corks before calling it a day. One day last year, we had four break-offs and recovered three of the four corks, one with a 28" red still attached. A $6.00 per popping cork, we try to come back with what we started with. Plus, I like to get that hook out of the fish’s mouth. It is cool to watch the fish swim around and you get a sense of what the fish are up to when you can’t see them. We have found several corks, no fish attached, lately as well.

use the cheap 25 cent corks for pinning, not the $6 ones. protip.

PM me, we need to meetup do I can get my corks back. Wando right?

Thanks toppyblue for your infinite wisdom of how to fish and I know people have done that and it’s not a conspiracy. I like your position on limits. That would keep our fishery nice and healthy for you and 3 of your idiot friends come out and keep 36 redfish. I guess the actual problem is people like you who have apparently done more research on our healthy fishery than dnr and know what length and numbers of fish to keep. I officially remove my former post now that I see our actual problem.

This should be in fishing discussion and I meant 24 fish

Popcorn anyone?

If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.

thanks Grateape…for the "
compliments" I respect my friends and there are no idiots among them…My knowledge is based on empirical data from personal experiences and observations. Not on assumptions and education from opinions…My knowledge is definitely NOT infinite , although the desire to share it and ALWAYS learn more will go on until the end.

Corks? One liter cola bottles painted orange work best!!

I like the thin pencil floats for that, it doesn’t wear out the guide towing it around  You can learn a lot by following a fish around for a day.

Yes but how long of a line do you put between the float and the hook?
