I’m going with my buddy to a nearshore reef this weekend. The last time I went bottom fishing, we used a reef anchor, and it was very effective. My buddy thinks he can get away with just using a mushroom anchor, but I have my doubts. I don’t want it to turn into a big waste of time when we get out there.
How important is it to have a reef anchor?

If you don’t plan on moving and dropping that anchor more than once you will be ok. But for me a reef anchor is the only way to go. Besides I’m to cheap to keep buying anchors.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
There are also quick inexpensive alterations you can make to your conventional danforth anchor that will allow you to use it as your heavy structure anchor without the worry of loosing it. Used an altered one for years at the near shore reefs without loosing it.
Below is a link to the set up that I used. Allows one to easily and quickly switch from the conventional attaching position to breakaway attachment position.
