Reef Anchoring

I’m going with my buddy to a nearshore reef this weekend. The last time I went bottom fishing, we used a reef anchor, and it was very effective. My buddy thinks he can get away with just using a mushroom anchor, but I have my doubts. I don’t want it to turn into a big waste of time when we get out there.

How important is it to have a reef anchor?

Go with your gut. Or be prepared to cut the rope if you drop another style into the wreck.

you might be okay on the shroom but let him know he might lose it. A reef anchor is really easy and cheap to make.

If you don’t plan on moving and dropping that anchor more than once you will be ok. But for me a reef anchor is the only way to go. Besides I’m to cheap to keep buying anchors.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

Reef anchors are made to use more than once… you may or may not get to use the mushroom again.

if u wont have a reef anchor, mark your drift on the plotter. Then keep drifting over spot using exsisring track

fish today work tomorrow

There are also quick inexpensive alterations you can make to your conventional danforth anchor that will allow you to use it as your heavy structure anchor without the worry of loosing it. Used an altered one for years at the near shore reefs without loosing it.

so… you got a picture?

I said “Goin Fishin”
She said “You were doing that yesterday”
I said “I am not finished”

Below is a link to the set up that I used. Allows one to easily and quickly switch from the conventional attaching position to breakaway attachment position.

I responded to this ad on craigslist:

I got this anchor for $45.

I took my anchor rope and chain off of an extra anchor that I never use and set it up like this:

We went out to the Charleston nearshore reef yesterday. The anchor worked great. It was a fun time.

We caught some of these pinfish…

…and then the horde of 11-12" black sea bass showed up.

Looks like a good day and you made the right decision with the anchor.
