going on a bottom fishing charter in 2 weeks in north florida and ive never hooked one so want to add amberjack to my list. i have a couple butterfly jigs and large jigs that ive used for grouper in diego garcia…would those work? dont know for sure where the captain is planning on taking us but said that a few will probably be around if i wanted to try to hook one.
Jigs would work fine, but if you want to have a little more excitement, use a surface plug or chugger. They usually can’t resist them, and they are fun to see crashing them.

Any butterfly jig will catch them. Any small live bait twenty feet off the bottom will catch them. Hang on!

I agree with 23Sailfish, keep your bait or lure above the bottom fish and you should get to the AJ’s. I used to love catching them on the headboats out of Mayport. Topwater is possible if you can get them up to the boat.
