Reefs and bouys with pics

Wednesday’s forecast was looking too sweet to sit onshore so after some offshore plans whet bust I put together the reefin gear and loaded the boat. I met riverrunner early in the morning and arrived at shem creek to a beautiful morning. The plan was set in action as soon as I loaded the livewell with cobia candy (large menhaeden) near the Ben Sawyer bridge. We spent some time at the jetties looking for jellys but only found one or two so I says screw it we got shrump! Arrived at the first reef on the agenda and not a boat in sight:smiley:. I did the one legged pirate dance on a chum bag of bait untill it was a right then deployed it and a pair of driftlines on the baitrunners. Ten mins later while riging our spade lines the baitrunner starts to sing and does not stop until the 7/0 owner was driven home. After a nice run and fight we bring my first king of the year to the boat where he was met by a cuda before he could be boated. By the time I got the rod back out the spades came up briefly and showed us a little action. The drift rod was smokin all morning between the kings cudas and sharks. I turned my back to the wind to light a smoke just in time to see a brownie coming streaking through the chum on a mission looking left and right for his next meal. I’ve seen lots of cobia but never one so aggressive as this one came up the chum line. I was quickly hooked up after a quick pitch with a live menhaeden. The cudas were circling my fish like a pack of wolves and I about lost all control when he was missed by the gaff 4 times:angry: I finally grabed the gaff and gave up the rod to get the fish in the boat. There must have been 30 cudas that just hung around in a couple schools near the boat so we were ready to move on. We jigged up some more bait on the bouy and went sight fishing on every bouy from the C bouy to the rocks catching many cudas and breaking off another beter cobia on a bouy chain.Stoped at ther nearshore on the way in just for a quick look around but no dice there. It was a reel fun day on the pond today

Very Nice Dan. Looks like you’ll be grillin up some brownie filets for a while.

There is nothing - absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Kenneth Grahame

Thanks Tommy. I have plenty of cobia already and my buddy was real happy when I told him to keep all the fish because my freezer is full and needs to get empty before August 15.

Good job from the Mouse Man. Check your e-mail.

i was told by dnr that keeping a piece of a fish was not legal unless the piece exceeded the minimum size limit.
sounds like a fun day. congrats

Good job Capt…We were out on the reef on the 28th. Had the same problem with those cudas, only they snatched our king off the hook. Lost a few spades to those critters too. Never could hook up on a brownie. Oh well maybe next time. Take care!

Islander the grill is the way to go.
Backlash we jigged up mostly sardines, greenbacks, pinfish and a few cigar minnows.
Cracker- Hah! I like your intronet scales but the fish was much lighter although it looks similar to some of the 30 and 35lb cobia that have been shown lately. funny stuff there
