I will possibly be going to the jetties on my friends boat which reel should I bring my shimano baitrunner 8000D, shimano cardiff 300a, or my penn senator 4/0. I know the baitrunner and cardiff would be enough for the reds but hooking into a big shark would be fun and i wouldnt want to loose it or have to cut the line. All help will be appreciated thanks in advance!

What are you trying to fish for?
Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.
Mainly red fish I was just suggesting the senator in case a shark were to take my bait. With 300yds. of 50lb. braid the baitrunner could definitely catch a 5-6ft. shark but I have heard there are some BIG sharks out there like 8 feet big if I’m not mistaken. Does any body know the main type of sharks out there?
I would think an 8000D baitrunner would give you a pretty good shot at getting anything to the boat you’d want to fool with anyway. You really need some huge, dedicated rigs to actually land sharks much bigger than what the baitrunner will handle. If the ~20lbs of drag the baitrunner lays down and 300 yds of line aren’t enough a 4/0 Senator probably won’t turn it around either, at least in any reasonable time.
Take the baitrunner, it will be a lot more fun and less hassle and won’t really hurt your chances of landing a pretty dang big fish!

2x baitrunner. But id take all three set ups. put you a big bait out on the senator and fish with the other one until you get a fish on both and then hand one off to your buddy!

Thanks for the info guys! I’ll bring the bait runner. What is a cheap rod I could get for it? preferably under $70.
If you’ll mostly use it from a boat, look for a 7’, medium or medium-heavy action Ugly Stick. If you also want to use it in the surf or from piers, might want to get an 8’. IMO you can’t beat them for sheer fish-catching durability, especially for the money (prob. about $40-60 depending on the exact model.)

Nothing wrong with a baitrunner!
