Hey Guys, Can anyone help me out. I have 3 large spinning reels to service. I’m going to do it myself, but I’m looking for recommendations for cleaning internal metal parts, grease, and oil. I forgot to look at Haddrells to see if they had these. Can anyone tell me where to find these supplies at a good price. Can I use a auto parts cleaner and sewing machine oil? Or gun oil? What about grease?
Reels are Penn 7500SS and 6500SS
Also, a question about drag washers. I have a reel that even when I losen the drag, when the drag is engaged it almost immediately starts tightening to nearly full drag. I took the washers out and don’t see any damage or anything. Definitely dirty and probably need to be greased but how do I know if I need to replace the drag washers.
thanks in advance for any tips.

WD 40 works pretty good as a solvent, but not as a primary lube. Any light oil should be fine. Reel grease you can find at Walmart or any tackle shop. The main objective is to get the salt, corrosion, and grit out, then lube them up well. There are some great tutorials online by Alan Tani. Check them out.

I use lighter fluid and white vinegar to clean/strip my reels. You can pick up Penn grease and oil at Hadrell’s.
If your drag is tightening as you reel, you are missing a part somewhere or something is stuck. I would suggest downloading the schematics for those reels before you begin any work (mikesreelrepair.com)and take pictures or videos as you go if it is the first time you’ve opened them up. The SS series is pretty straight forward.
I’d be glad to help you out if you need it.

Long Enuff nailed it! Priority number 1, get the saltwater off of and out of your gear.
I’ve found since switching to Hot Sauce (gear grease and oil), I have to apply lubricant less than with traditional gear grease and oil. I still service my saltwater gear once a year though, just for GP. Quantum or not, I use that stuff on every reel I own. Take that for what it’s worth

The drag doesn’t tighten down when I reel, but rather when the drag is engaged. If I caught a big fish on that reel and had say 15lb test on it, As soon as that fish made a run it would snap my line because the drag once its engaged goes from light to heavy almost immediately. No pieces missing, it was working fine a year ago. Anyone else have any ideas about the drag and why it tightens to nearly max when line is pulled? TIA

Clean it up and get the grit and salt out. I started using Kroil on my guns years ago and then fishing gear. Not one issue since and it seems to protect better than anything else I have used to date Tried spray on lithium grease but it seemed to gunk up pretty fast.
I had a Stradic 8000 that I put up and forgot to clean last season, it was working but the bail stuck some and the knob was stiff. I Cleaned it, Kroiled it and it’s working like new now.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

My opinion is use synthetics. They stay cleaner, don’t get stiff when it’s cold and repel water well. When I finish servicing my reels, I take the oily rags, and wipe the whole reel down on the outside. Water beads up like they’ve been waxed.
As for your drag issue, the stack is important. On that reel, behind the spool is a thrush washer, then spool, octogon washer,Teflon drag washer, small keyed drag washer, friction disk, octogon washer, friction disk, small keyed drag washer the retaining ring and the nut.
I just took apart and lubed one of my Penn spinning reels. My anti reverse wasn’t catching. It was very irritating so I had to fix it. I was amazed at how complicated a mechanism the anti reverse gear was.
I sprayed out the parts with carb cleaner. I don’t know if that is recommended but it worked. Then I sprayed everything down with Penn reel lube and re-assembled it. Anti reverse catches every time now!
One thing I recommend is working on a large table and laying out a newspaper so you can set out all your parts in separate areas as you disassemble.

X2 on the large table. I use one of those white fold up 6 foot tables, layer of newspaper, then an old towel and assorted rags. Lay everything neatly in the order of disassembly. I just finished with a couple of TLD 15’s and a Penn 114H.
