Anybody have recommendations on what kind of spray or grease works good on AG 6500’s. Thinking about replacing the drag washers and cleaning them up.
Thanks

Getting ready to do mine as well. I am going to be using corrosionX or reelx on anything moving fast, bearings, levelwind, etc…and yamaha marine grease on the gears. From everything i have read this is the way to go. But if you ask 3 people you will get 6 answers.
Hoping in the next week or two, to go ahead and bite the bullet and upgrade to the carbonex drag washers as i mentioned in the other thread. Just having trouble swallowing the 100$ for drag washers:dizzy_face:

Funny yall should mention reel maintenance. I just took apart one of my Diawa Accudepth reels. I lost anti-reverse on Saturday. Everything was still well-lubricated. Just the anti-reverse plate is failing to lock the gear. I’ll figure it out later. Everything’s in ziplock for now. I’ve got plenty of reels to use.

This is the main reason i switched back to AG’s. Actually was outfitted with okuma’s and pinnacle’s. Too much play in a “dog” style AR reel and if that spring messes up you have zero anti-reverse. where with the AG’s the one way bearing on the main gear shaft in always there and functioning, and easy to replace IF it ever breaks, but haven’t actually seen one ever break. Did see a pic of a broken one once…lol…

Fogman, I haven’t seen the inside workings of your reel, however, if the anti-reverse is like the old Ambass. or Diawa reels, also check the pressed in post that it works on for play. Play on the post is bad. I have learned this from my worn out Diawa.
Also, Hot Sauce seems to be a pretty good lube for baitcasters.
Thanks guys. Guess I will try stretching out one of the springs. It did seem a little compressed. There are 2, and the other looked good.

A little off topic but here’s a great website for “tricked out” super reels and casting rods for surf fishing. Imagine this, Ryan White can cast a 6 ounce weight over the Superdome in New Orleans…lol I’m sure they can answer any questions you may have on lubrication and drag washers too. His average cast is over 725 feet.

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
I’ve always cleaned with wd40 and used Vaseline to lube. It’s just how my dad taught me and I’ve stuck with it. Never had any problems except if I used too much, the drag was silent.

Tom i used to do the same, till the reels started leaking in the summer and got kinda tight in the winter. Vasoline seems to vary too much for me with the weather. And had a couple bad instances with wd40 turning into varnish… lol…not fun to get that out. But to each his own…
Google alan tani reels. Another great.“hot rodding” site. And a ton of tutorials on rebuilds with pix.

I found these websites awhile back when I was looking for replacement washers for one of my AG5500C3 reels. I got the Cal’s grease and used it on the carbontex drag washers…used AG oil on the rest of the reel. The folks at Smoothdrag were good to work with…
