Several weeks ago I had taken my boys down to the beach for some surf fishing. Long story short, two of my reels ended up in the water in the surf zone. I cleaned the reels multiple times, but they still have a gritty sound and feel when reeling in line. Is there a method to get all of the grit out? Or do I just have to replace the bearings in the reels or the reels themselves? They are not expensive reels, around $100 a piece, but II would prefer to salvage them rather than replace them. If that’s possible. Would a gun scrubber type of solvent, under pressure get the grit out? Then re-lube with good grease and oil? Thanks.

Thanks for the assist GW! I have taken them apart, just haven’t been able to get all the grit out of the bearings, I guess. I’ll check out the site right now to see if I missed a step.

Open the bearings, you can see how at Alan’s site.
But simply use a sharp hook to get the lock ring out of the bearing, (yes there is a lock ring, it is very small and srping loaded, watch it)
Alan may even recommend leav ing the seal out of the bearing. I think he subscibes to free flowing so water can escape the bearing.
Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.

Great site. Thanks for the info fellas. Now all I need is one of those “high-speed” lighted magnifying things so I can see all that small stuff. Lol! It’s hell getting old and blind.

Haddrells said that the bearings were shot and Quantum didn’t stock/sell parts for chain store specific reels. I bought mine at Dicks. So I ended up buying a reel at Haddrells. So buyer beware about buying reels sold only at Dicks, Walmart or Sports Authority. You may noot can get replacement parts. So buy the extended warranty like I did. At least you can get it replaced if not repaired. Anyway I bought a Shimano Sahara and they spooled it with 25lb Power Pro for me on the spot. Since tey couldn’t fix mine and I bought a new reel from them they were kind enough to give me a discount on the PP. Nice folks at Haddrells! Could I have gotten a better deal on Ebay? You bet. But Shimano gives you a 1 year warranty and Haddrells extends that to a secoond year for all Shimano and Penn reels. Plus my money stays local. Always a plus with B&B shutting down and so many others struggling.
