Reelly Blessed - 06/12 Fred Day !FISH ID PLEASE!

Hey All,

Due to time constraints on my day, I couldn’t spend a full morning trolling. However, from most of the chatter I heard on the radio, it seems like I would not have had much luck anyway had I decided to go out there.

So, I took my Dad and two boys out to the Fred Day Wreck on the recommendation of a very well known fisherman. We showed to the parking lot that is also known as Remley’s. I’ve never been to a local boat launch, on a Saturday, with a forecast like that, just before day break. That was a sight, let me tell you.[:0]

We finally got our turn to put the boat in, despite the guy just before us whose motor would not turn over, taking up the entire right side of the slip. We helped push him over to the other side of the dock, get our boat in, and off we go.

We find the Fred Day, and we are the only boat there. I ran over the wreck a few times, marked it, and tried my best to set up upstream of the current. First attempt had us right over the wreck. Lost three rigs right away. Hauled up anchor, or should I say my Dad fell over pulling the anchor up as it popped off the bottom. Funny and scary all at the same time.:imp: Repositioned the boat and proceeded to keep fishing. The action was slow and we really didn’t see much. Lot’s of stolen bait and me and my father running around setting the boys up with their poles.

Total for the day was.

1 Shark
1 Remora
3 Black Sea Bass
3 Bank Sea Bass
2 unidentified

I need help with the unidentified ones. Here they are.

This one had the teeth and pectoral fins of a Sheephead.

Not sure what this one is called either.

This is the Remora. I got all excited watching it come up because I thought at first it was a Cobia looking straight down in the water. Then I saw the stripes on the side and my hopes were dashed. However, it made for a cool catch being we’ve never seen

Good for you!!!, glad you got to take your Dad and boys out fishing…cant buy memories like that…

i think it’s a ring tail fish.

First one is a spottail pinfish, Diplodus holbrooki.

Second is a cubbyu, Equetus umbrosus.

Looks like a fun day had by all!

Great going Adam!
I’m glad y’all had a great time and a safe time!
Looks like those little men had a fun time out with Dad and Grandpa!!
Tell the bride and the little ones I said hello…

Thanks everyone.

@Penny - Anytime I get my kids out, and my father to boot, out on any body of water memories being made is inevitable.

@Sublime and Ole Grady - Thanks for the ID help. That spottail pinfish really surprised me with that mouth. I thought I had caught some kind of Sheep hybrid or something. LOL!!!

Thanks Lynn. You must have posted while I was posting. Your reply wasn’t there when I typed mine out.

How did you guys make out that morning? I was listening on 68 and it seemed like a lot of slingers and peanuts, but no real action was being had.

First fish ID we have always called Ringtail. I guess they are also known as spotail pinfish?

Thanks Patientmaker. I’ve had about 50/50 from asking around from folks whether they say ringtail or spottail.

No, we didn’t have a lot of action, but we had a great time out on the pond! :slightly_smiling_face:

For those of you not familiar with FishBase, you’re really missing out on a quality resource for checking fish ID, common names, scientific names, etc. The address that links you directly to the search engine is http://www.fishbase.org/search.php

Enjoy!

Do the ring tails taste good?
That is a nice day and post. I need to take my dad fishing more.

Umm, you gonna eat that?©

Thanks Sublime. I do know of Fishbase, but I’ve never figured out how to start the process with just a picture. Other than scrolling through ALL the pictures they have hoping to find the right one. This seemed easier to ask those with way more knowledge and experience than me. I figured I’d get quick answers here.

Strange - I have no idea. Didn’t know what it was at the time so back into the water it went. I love being able to pay back my father for all the years of getting my lines out of trees, fixing up my rigs, and dealing with all my bathroom breaks over the years as I grew up. I owe to him all of my passion for fishing and it’s a drop in the bucket to pay him back every so often.

I have heard of a few that eat them, but they don’t come home with me…

It is awesome to get Dad on the water every now and then!! :slightly_smiling_face:

Ringtails are OK to eat. I have scaled them and pan fried them. They are slightly fishy with a LOT of bones. I am with Lynn, they don’t make it home with me anymore. Once was enough!

good job adam. glad you got the boyz out. i know the oldest was dying to go, he kept askin and askin! oh by the way… the dolphin are callin our name…

Insert Funny Line Here

jstrange - In terms of eating, I’m not a big fan of too many of the porgys other than sheephead. Scup, knobbed porgy, spottial pinfish, even red porgys aren’t my fave. Sheephead rock however, reds are ok in stew, but the others are kinda gamey to me.

Sirecks - if you can at least get your fish down to the family level, FishBase will be easier for you. For example, snappers are lutjanids, grouper are serranids, porgys are sparids, jacks are carangids, etc. That will narrow your searches significantly.

Lynn - Little fish or big fish, catchin’ 'em is what I was after and that’s what put a smile on the boys faces. I was happy with that.

Alex - I hear you, and I hear those dolphin!! However, I go back to work full time on the 15th. So, my trips are going to be very short notice, with long gaps in the middle. I’ll keep you posted man.

SublimeOne - Thanks for the tip. I wish I had more of a knowledge base for that sort of stuff. I guess as I get more experience with this offshore fishing stuff I’ll gain it sooner or later. HA HA HA!!

You've got it figured out. Good for you to take your dad and kids. As for the Ring-tail Porgy, they are Ok but not great. If catching is tough I will keep a couple just to "stink up the pan". Usually we fillet them and only keep the loin or upper part of the fillet. Mostly we use them for bait. I think it helps to soak the fillets in fresh water overnight before cooking them. You should give them a try sometime.
