"Reelly Blessed" first bottom trip

Hey all. The “Reelly Blessed,” along with yours truly, Kut08, lynnmcd, and a buddy of mine who has never bottom fished before fished yesterday for the first time for bottom dwellers.

Fished around and in the SW Banks. I wanted to catch lots of grouper, trigger, and BSB’s. Got most of that. We couldn’t find the triggers. However, brought in two scamps, one nice one (my first!!).

Saw a lot of crazy stuff from an 8 foot tiger swimming around, to our mahi (just before he was hooked) just sticking his head out of the water. Not jumping or swimming, just poking his head out, and also a white marlin put on a great show for us as well.

Totals for the day were:

1 Mahi
1 White Grunt
2 Scamps
2 Triggahs
4 B-liners
10 Joltheads
10 BSB’s
12 Pinkies

Nice haul! Anchor or drift? Live or cut bait?

That mahi was looking for C17’s that might squeal on his whereabouts to fishermen!

I had a great time fishing with the Joisy Boys again!
My “redneck” self may not be invited on the Reelly Blessed again due to the ribbing I was giving the captain most of the day, though.
Just watching Rich catch fish was worth the trip! I know I had an awesome time, as usual, just being out there with a great group of fellas!! We had a safe trip, a fun time and brought home some good groceries.:slightly_smiling_face: Sirecks worked hard to find the fish that we caught! I know he (as all of us) wanted more, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. I know that, because I am probably the worst bottom fisherman on the east coast, but I always have a great time on the big blue!! Yesterday was no exception = great time!
We even got a workout from some of those bronze fin tunas here and there.
Thanks again, Captain Sirecks, for the trip!!

Drifted to find spots then anchored. Had to try out the new Mighty Mite. Cut and live bait. Live for our two grouper set ups.
Did have a bunch of F-18’s buzzing around overhead. Maybe the mahi was watching the dogfighting practice.

Lynn, you’ve always been such a gracious host to me, it was about time I got to return the favor. You are always welcome on The Reelly Blessed. Can’t wait to have you out again. Next time we will find those triggahs.

Nice job. I can’t catch a grouper to save my life. One on your first trip is pretty awesome!

It’s getting harder and harder the older I get to not look around and feel completely blessed about my life. My boat, the fact that I even have a boat to enjoy fishing and boating on, is enough of a testament to my life being blessed. Hence, her name.:wink: Then I get to share a day out on the water with good friends and catch good fish . . . . Sometimes I feel too blessed.

Great work

those joltheads are some gooooood eating!

That’s what I’m most excited about with this catch, is to try those Jolt’s. I was told they taste like Red Snapper . . . . of course since no one has seen them in a while, being they are extinct now off our shores, I’m glad there seems to be a substitute for them!! LOL!!

the meat is like pure white. its awesome

Small sharp hooks and small chunks of bait reeled up off the bottom works good for the triggers, if they are there. If you get in them good you can hold off on smaller fish bites until you feel a harder trigger bite and set the hook. Also, a lot of times smaller fish attacking a bait will lead to larger ones coming over to investigate and possibly eating said bait. Don’t always set the hook at the little taps. Works for me hope it can help you out! Congrats on the day!

Oh, I’ve been trigger fishing before on others boats. Pulled in over 40 one day. For that matter, this was not my first bottom trip. Just my first trip with my boat, my gear, me calling the shots, etc. I just could not find them that day. There were no trigger marks on the fish finder, and there were NO hits when I would keep the bait 20 to 30 feet off the bottom in any place we anchored. Just was out smarted by the trig’s. LOL!!!

Wasn’t attacking sorry if it came off that way man!! Sounds like you have a good idea of how to catch them!
