Reels

I just bought 2 SHIMANO Solstace FI 4000 Reels. I’m mostly in the creeks chasing Reds and Trout but they are incredibly smooth. Only $39.99 and they look sweet too.

what is the difference between the solstace and the sedona’s?

Something to consider with the 300 or 4000 debate is that often those sizes (and many consecutive models) are built on the same frame. You can usually tell if the weights are only an ounce or so apart and the max drag is the same. It is often just a larger spool and resulting slightly longer retrieve. For no real gain in weight (which pretty much takes balance for a particular rod out of the equation), the additional capacity might be worth it. Different for each make/model but worth considering.

Very simple for me. ABU Garcia baitcasters and Penn SS series spinning reels. I have several of each that are more than 15 years old that I still fish with regularly. In 25 years of lowcountry saltwater fishing I have never lost a fish due to a reel malfuntion with either of those reels.

I like the Penn Sargus ~$69-$79 and for a little more the PENN Battle ~$99…supper reels. All spinning reels. Some cheaper Shimano “Sienna’s” are around $30 bucks each on all sizes.

For a baitcaster you can’t go wrong with the Abu 5500C3. Excellant reels and they are in the price range you specified. I can’t comment on the less expensive spinners as all mine cost more than you want to spend

Thanks yall.

Take a look at the PENN Pursuit ($39-$59), these reels share a lot of the same internal parts as the Fierce ($59-95-$79.95) reels so if parts are ever needed they will be easy to find at Haddrell’s. These reels are solid. http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/sportsmans/Penn-Pursuit-Spinning-Reel/productDetail/Spinning-Reels/prod99990134288/cat101041#reviews. If you don’t want to go over $75 the Fierce will give you the most bang for your buck. Check out the reviews on BP web page. http://www.basspro.com/Penn-Fierce-Saltwater-Spinning-Reels/product/10209996/141867. If you have any questions Hooked up on either reel please let me know. Thanks.

my only concern is whether those pursuit can handle some of the bigger reds that are in the 30 inch range

Hooked up I understand your concerns on the durability but I can promise you for the money you would spend on a Pursuit you would be more then pleased. Don’t forget PENN reels are designed for Saltwater use. The Pursuit even has a metal side plate to keep the gears in alignment while under load and the frame of the reel is beefed up to handle heavy loads. The PUR6000-PUR8000 would be ideal for reds 30" and larger.

I have two pursuits and have hauled in a couple 29-30 in reds on em and they do good. I did just upgrade Monday at Haddrells to a Battle 3000 and it is amazing and light took it out same day and got some trout no reds yet but still had the pursuit sittin out and sure enough got a red on it instead of the battle. Penn keeps on steppin it up. The Pursuits have a little cosmetic wear and tear but just like everyone always says good maintanince and your ok.

I pulled in a 4 foot blacktip with a Penn Pursuit combo. He spit the top hook, was tail hooked by the second and I brought him in. The shark and reel were no worse for wear. I’ve used the reel for about 4 years and it’s held up well. I bought a new 650SS spinfisher this year but still use the pursuit because it always gets the fish.

If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.

Like the Penn Sargus for a cost effective, quality reel.

Got a Revo Winch Toro inshore wide spool for throwing cranks and lipless cranks on a 7’ 10" MH KVD cranking rod with braid and a floro leader in a 4.6:1 ratio. Works like a champ and casts a mile. Well worth the cost. Abu Garcia Revo’s and Winch’s are top notch for large mouth, small mouth, spotted bass, and for certain inshore fishing and will handle all any Redfish can dole out with the terrific drags they offer. I’ll take a bait caster over a spinning reel anytime I can get away with it unless I have to absolutely go to light line then a spinning reel will dominate on handling and casting distance alone.

I like Penn, got 3 reels. But I had 2 Sargus reels tear up after 3 years. Haddrell’s said DOA.

Stick with the Penn SSG series. They are a bit more than $75 but will last for years if you take care of them. I’ve caught numerous 30"+ reds with the 440 and 430 series and have had no problem. Drag just as smooth as the first day in the water. Replacement parts are easy to come by too.
