Reels

Will be selling off my Penn Senators soon,( 16/0, 12/0, 9/0), now that my days of sharking from the beach are not as frequent and I have the boat to get out pretty good ways. Looking to jump to something more for trolling. Looking at Avet and Penn International. Any thoughts? Looking at going with 30-50lb.

I would just like to see a Senator 16/0. That has got to be a biggun!!!

It is. I have packed 1200 yds of Braided Dacron 130 lb on it many times. Bought it new in in '84 and it still looks fantastic. Fought some serious sharks on it over the years. Just don’t see it’s use trolling. Was hoping to get some replys with some reel suggestions but apparently no one is willing to give up an state secrets on what are good offshore reels.???

I’d go with Avets over the Penns. Better drag, great smaller company and more color options. I’m looking for a 50 EX or 50 EXW myself.

Just got a new Avet Blue HX 5/2 MC Raptor loaded with 100lb JB matched with a Seeker Hercules 60XH. Can’t wait to try this thing out. Bottom fishing:smiley:!

I could probably troll with this setup if I add enough topshot?

Absolutely. I recently picked up a pair of HXW 4.2 on the Star Paraflex PGSU59XXH for trolling. Will put either 65 lb braid with 50 lb mono top shot or straight 40lb mono on them.

Thanks, guys. I have been doing dome looking at Avet, Shimano and Penn, particularly. I want something for 30-50 lb for trolling that is reliable and not too awful expensive. I was thinking of the 50’s so i could put 8-0 lb on if I liked as well. Still want something I can battle big Tiger sharks on as well. Probably need 3 setups. @ for trolling and one for trolling? big sharks. Also looking at a couple of jigging outfits for high speed jigging offshore.

That is, in fact, one I was researching a bit. Looked good. I trust most  of ya’ll on here so I appreciate the insight. I know you know your stuff Sellsfish. Thanks, man! Will now look at who has the best price.

I’ll second the Tyranos. Great trolling reels for the money.

I use them dual purpose…I have two of them mounted on short bent butt rods spooled with 130# braid and use them for wahoo trolling with planers and weights and also use them as heavy grouper rigs for bottom fishing

I put four of these Avet HXW-2 combos on my boat this year for trolling rigs. They are loaded with 400 yds. of 50lb. mono. They have caught dolphin, wahoo, and even had a large blue marlin on for about 20 minutes until he broke off in a patch of weeds. For the Charleston area, they are an excellent choice, small and light weight, but strong enough to handle almost anything we run across.
