I’m looking for ■■■■■■■■ on buying a refurbished yamaha. Currently have a 92 Johnson 70 hp but it’s been steadily declining in reliability and breaking down. Has anyone had good or bad experiences buying a refurbished Yamaha? I found a guy in the savannah area that tracks down mid 90’s models, fixes them up and sells them for $3-$4k installed.
While it would be nice to just get a new motor with similar power I can’t bring myself to spend the $12k that will take. A refurbished Yamaha seems reasonable but I’m looking for ■■■■■■■■ good or bad on going this route.
Thanks in advance
I would have that Johnson looked over by someone good and see if it can be saved or even rebuilt before i went looking for whole new engine. If that engine is screwed to the point where it is too much $ and don;t feel like dealing with it then yeah those Yamahas don’t sound too bad.
x2 on saving/rebuilding the Johnson. Otherwise, do the Yammys come with any type of warranty? Can you check on his work with friends or references?
If you dont mind me asking what is the name of this place and do they have a website. I am in need of a motor and cant afford to buy a new one. The one I have has a hole in the block so there is no rebuilding it.

Had a neighbor that worked for someone on the Navy Base that was rebuilding Yamahas. He was a good tech but told me not to get one because they used aftermarket parts. Ask the guy what parts he is using, OEM Yamaha or some cheap Chinese parts, gaskets and seals.

Appreciate the ■■■■■■■■ thus far as its exactly what I’m fishing for - different ideas/options on this and experiences with refurbs.
I’m told by the mechanic I use that the current motor is on its way out as he’s done a good bit of work on it the past few years. When your mechanic tells you it time to start exploring other options, I’m taking his opinion all day. Its also getting harder and harder to find parts for it as the supply is drying up to the point where the last few repairs cannibalized parts from other used motors.
I’ve heard of the guy on the old Navy base but I’m told he doesn’t sell them for less than $5k.
I don’t have the contact info with me now but will post later. Scanning the boat section of craigslist is how I found him.
Thanks again for the ■■■■■■■■ and keep it coming
a new 70 Yamaha wont cost anywhere near 12k
more like 8-9k with new everything
what year is the Johnson?
I don’t think the savannah guy is actually remanning the motors.
if they have good compression, I don’t think he goes into the powerhead.
they guy from craigslist does take them down and starts over, but it may have been a 1990 motor, so when you are done, you have $5000.00 in a 24 year old motor.

My Evinrude 115 dropped a cylinder and I found a guy outside Clemson that did my complete powerhead 40 over w/ new pistons, parts and labor for 1300… also thru in a new motor cover, throttle cables and rebuilt the lower end w/ new gears and a used case w/new water pump for an additional 700.00 and found me a SS prop for 50.00.
We test drove the boat on his lake for final timing set…purred like a kitten.
WELL worth the travel time…and only took 2 weeks

I would definitely keep in touch with that guy
machine shop fees and parts for a 4 cylinder complete rebuild will cost close to $1300, no labor
pistons are $100 each
