Regatta etiquette

What is the etiquette around regattas? Talking about more than right-of-way here.

Today we came out from behind Sullivan’s and plowed across to the Ashley due to the wind. We cut behind a cargo ship and in between groups of sailboats and seemed to be fine.

However, coming back from the Ashley, a Coast Guard patrol boat cut us and several other boats off and said to avoid the regatta. They directed us to the South shoreline, which we hugged as best we could, but obviously it gets really shallow over there.

My question though is, not too far from the channel marker, we came across a yellow race marker and a center console south of it, anchored from the stern. It was low tide, so I didn’t want to go behind that boat, so I followed 3 other boats between the marker and the anchored center console. There were no sailboats in the vicinity, but I’m sure the churn wasn’t helpful.

Was that the right move, or is there a better alternative?

Thanks!
