register a canoe with a trolling motor ?

If I were to throw a trolling motor on the back of my 14’ canoe, would I really have to register it?

I have asked around and a few have told me “No”. A few others have told they thought I would. And some others have just said, “It’s canoe. Who cares.”

I have thought about picking up a cheap trolling motor to use once every now and then since I have a couple of deep cycle batteries in the garage. But I have no title on my canoe.

So does anyone know for sure?

yes- it must be registered. adding a trolling motor makes it a power boat- all must be registered.

Jeff Davis is my President

yes, it has to be registered.

agree w/ Bad Habit on this one. It becomes a power boat, must be registered and carry a full complement of safety gear.

It doesn’t have to be titled if it is under five horsepower.

Agreed, no title, but you will need hull numbers with any type of motor or engine. Like TooBusy said also, you will need all safety equipment that would be required of a 14ft jon boat.

Ok. Thanks guys. I had looked on the DNR site but I guess I just did not see where it said anything about having to register something like a canoe with a trolling motor.

I will probly not bother with a trolling motor on it for now. I dont mind paddling anyway.

Thanks again for the info.

Not really a hassle to do it, only about $10-15 a year to register it. With an electric you probably don’t need a fire extinguisher, so just another throwable cushion and you’d be set.

Caught me on Lake Murray 2 years ago with a trolling motor on my canoe and wrote me a ticket for $250.

The DNR guy was real nice about it and assured me it would probably get dropped if I showed up at the Magistrate on the court date showing I got it registered. They dropped it, but still cost me a lot of time at the Magistrate that day. I knew the law, but I thought it would a real PITA to get registered since I bought it years ago and I had no paperwork, so I decided to take a chance. Like DD said, turns out there was really nothing to it. Paid taxes and reg fee, signed a few papers answering a few questions about where and when I purchased it and I was out of DNR with a registration in no time.

In a single kayak, who exactly are you going to throw the cushion to?

My thoughts exactly Old Ranger, but it doesn’t matter to Mr Green Jeans.

Do sneak boats have to carry all that extra stuff too? I’ve never seen a sneak boat anywhere with all the safety gear and the extra throw cushion.

Also, how do you register it with no serial number? I have one I’d like to add a trolling motor to for an occasional long trek upstream.

Any watercraft that is powered by something other than human power needs to be registered.

The link that Carl Winslow posted is not about registering a watercraft–it is about titling an outboard motor. Any motor less than 5HP does not need to be titled, but a boat with any size motor on it does need to be registered.

Yes, sneak boats have to carry safety gear but canoes and kayaks have to carry the same safety gear whether they have motors or not. Lifejacket and whistle is all you need to be legal, unless you have a gas motor. And you need the proper lights if you’ll be out in the dark.

Thanks RP, I’ll go do the deed and get legal then.
