CG is more expensive than SCDNR. I am not sure about switching from one to the other.

are you talking about a Documented boat vs a state registered boat?

yes, its already documented

If you are going to make trips to the islands or other countries; stay with the documentation that is in place. If you will be staying local, go with DNR registration. It’s cheaper for sure. Your question about swapping from CG to DNR is simple; if it’s documented and that is no longer desired, just allow it to expire, which happens automatically if you dont renew it. DNR only needs a clear bill of sale to process your new registration. The biggest reason that folks around here used to desire documentation over registration was taxes. Some documentation ports of call have no taxes on vessels,ie., I believe Florida still has none. However, in todays tech savvy world, South Carolina has tracked documented vessels through the CG documentation records and if you live here, they will send you a tax bill even if you have a vessel doumented in Miami. It will be up to you to prove to them that the vessel is berthed in Miami in order to skirt the tax bill. I believe they tax anyone’s vessel who stays in SC waters over 3 months. So , if you were looking at the tax angle, forget it and go with DNR.
