Registration numbers font

So the DNR regs in the Boaters handbook say that the registration numbers and letters must be in 3 inch BLOCK font. They make a point to All Cap and Bold it, so i’m wondering how lenient is this? Can i use any font as long as it’s not a cursive script and it meets the size requirements? i want to match the font from my boat name graphic, which technically is script but the capital letters and numbers do not intersect like script usually does.

Am i making something out of nothing or could i be setting myself up for a ticket at the discretion of an LEO who is having a bad day?

1)You have the intent of the law (registration numbers must be legible from a distance)
2) You have black letter law (block letters all caps)
3) You have LEO interpretation
4) You have a judge’s interpretation
5) You have a fine to pay or not

Will leave it up to you to decide how things may or may not work through the above order.

I wanted my registration numbers to match the font in my boat name. It is a font called Jokerman. It has been on my boat for nearly 4 years and I have passed many DNR guys both here and in FL and no one has ever said anything.

i would not worry about it. It would probably be a fix it ticket anyway. If you got a ticket you could probably change it before the court date on the ticket, prove it to them, and they would not make you pay anything. just make sure it is legible and the proper size.

As long as you can read it from a distance. Also remember you should have a space between the letters / numbers / letters. SC 1234 AB
