So I’m picking up my first boat over the next couple of days from Florida.
I’m looking at the registration forms on line and it appears that I need to get the seller to sign the registration application but also have that notarized. Is that correct, that I have to arrange a notary when i pick up the boat?
Call DNR office to verify, but… I called and asked the same question and was told a notary was not necessary. I purchased from out of state last summer, had the seller sign the paperwork when purchased. Didn’t have any issue registering the boat at DNR office.
I just sold a boat a month ago to a man in North Carolina. That state requires a notarized bill of sales, signed by both parties, in front of a notary. He came down to pick it up and we went to my bank and got that done. It was painless. Cost nothing. He had no problem registering it in NC after that.
Thanks guys. i did call DNR and a very nice lady told me that the title was to be signed over to me and that should be notarized. but there is no space om the FL title to do that. The forms i need to submit to SC DNR to register has a line for the notary so we will use that in Jacksonville tomorrow.
Thanks, y’all may see me pop up a bit asking dumb questions as this is my first boat.
You didn’t say what kind of boat you are buying or where you are located but…just in case you are buying an outboard to be registered in SC… Make sure you get a separate Bill Of Sale (Use the one of SCDNR website) for the outboard motor(s). Florida does not title outboards, SC does. You will save yourself a BIG PITA if you have the Bill of Sale when you register your boat and motor(s)
Thanks Tico. I have all the paperwork signed and notarized. Im in SC, seller was in FL. I’m getting back on DNR site to see if i can go to a local office to do this as I dont want to mail all these docs. thanks again
I bought my boat from a guy in Georgia. The boat was still titled to his mother inlaw (lol, I know what everyone is thinking.) He had a bill of sale with her name on it, the hull ID/motor numbers, and blank where buyer and price were. Title for hull and trailer were Florida tittles. Bought in his front yard on Sunday, no notary. I took the docs I had (titles for boat n trailer and a picture of the motor’s serial number with bill of sale to DNR office on johns island. Lady ran the serial number to make sure it wasn’t reported as stolen. Paid my fee and got titles for boat an motor in the mail 2 weeks later.
Was easy, they had the form at the office, longest/hardest part was the time I spent on the road.
I wish I had made my own bill of sale, they wouldn’t have known and the tax is %5 of hull and motor price.
