Regulator vs Cape Horn vs Contender

I am a manager for a huge dealership in Texas but we are trying to get back in the offshore market after getting rid of Boston Whaler and Triton. If I was a regulator Dealer I would not have any competition in texas but If I was a Contender dealer then I would have a few other dealers to worry about. I can not be a Yellowfin dealer eventhough I love Yellowfin because they are only factory direct. We looked at Pursuit but it does not have the name that a regulator has.

BTW Barrier Island Marine is a regulator and Pursuit delaer and they seem to think Regulator isa little nicer then the Pursuit. I am in a MArket of a lot of Catamarans because it gets real choppy but the swells are nothing like the east coast.

I love hearing when they say it gets 8-10 ft swells and they are fishing in a 29 ft cat. I almost want to all them dummies but I have to hold my tongue.

From reds to marlin you got it.

Well since you are in the business already you prob. know a lot more about profit margins, etc than anyone on this site. That would be a huge piece to consider if I was looking to expand. The other would be the product line from smaller boats to the big boys. Both Reg and Contender offer top notch boats from 21…23 all the way up to 35 plus. That is a huge advantage over YF and SP to name a couple. There is huge brand loyalty with Contender and Reg owners. Most people start out in a smaller Contender or Reg and end up going bigger and bigger or start big and go smaller. Not a whole lot of boat manufacturers have that kind of loyalty. I know someone that has bought 4 26 Regulators to give you an idea of the loyalty. I am sure you can find lots of people that can say the same

I would like to ride in a yellowfin to see what all the fuss is about. I really have a problem with them claiming to be the top tier cc boat but primarly selling Mercurys. I personally don’t like them and I have not seen a whole lot of proud merc owners. Big ones that is. I know some guys that love their 25s and 40s. Why be the best and put mediocracy on your stern?? They do also do not have the fishing platform contender does. But I have heard great things about their ride from contender owners. Again, I really want to ride in one. hint, hint,

Sure Plum will chime in pretty soon on the regulated bath tub:stuck_out_tongue:

Why not mention the 32 yellowfin with twin yamaha’s that went around your 31 contender with identical power like it was standing still last month??? Momentary lapse of reality or selective memory?

Instead you pick on the American-made motors they choose to hang on the back of the fastest yellowfins you see on the internet? You can get Suzuki, Yamaha or Merc on your yellowfin. What are you waiting for? What kind of motors can you get on a new Contender?

Word on the street is that a buddy of mine will be getting a “little” 29 yellowfin with twin 250 yamaha’s pretty soon. I wonder if it will outrun your 31 contender in whatever sea conditions you feel up to the challenge in.

Care to make a prediction???

  1. Got me confused with someone else sir. Not been out run by any yellowfins offshore. Must have been one of your day dreams.

  2. The BEST ones on the market.

  3. I will GLADLY take you and your boy up on this. Lets add one little clause that means the most, number of fish. I will beat you back to the hill with more fish on board![:0] I thought this guy had the worlds best, most indestructible boat ever made anyway? Why is he changing brands???

Makes you wonder how many people have actually been on a Yellowfin or for that matter any boat they comment on in these types of forums. I hear great things about Yellowfin, but I suspect more than half of the people that “rave” over these or for that any boat have never actually been on one. They have a friend that has a friend that has a friend that went 40 knots in 8 ft. seas in brand X.

I have been on a few yellowfins and words do not describe the overall boat. The fit and finish is a step above the rest and the ride is amazing. The biggest problem with yellowfin is that you have to pull the boat back to florida for any type of warranty work and most people do not want to drive that far for warranty work.JTM you are correct about the loyalty base because I see it with Sea Hunt boats and our Skeeter boats. You sell a good product and people stay with that product for life. We are still months away from deciding what we want to do but we would like to have an offshore line in the Houston Boat show.

Also regarding yellowfin and only coming with Mercs, This years Yellowfin Demo boat had yamah V8s on the back. To be completely honest if I had all the money in the World and was looking for a top notch center console I do think I would buy a Regulator but I was wanting to hear if anyone had any cons about the boats and experience.

AMEN! I have owned Hydra-sport, Wellcraft, Pursuit, and now Regulator. I liked something about all of the above mentioned. I have fished on just about every type of offshore boat around, and everybody has their opinions and personal comforts, likes/dislikes. The Pursuit rode really well in head and beam seas, but for some reason would wet you in a close following sea. ??? I have yet to figure that one out, but overall was really satisfied with the proformance of the vessel. My personal opinion about Contender is their well made, lots of fishing room, but are WET rides period, and I don’t like having to get on my hands and knees to dig gear out of the floor hatches, and that the fish boxes drain into the bilge. Yellowfins are AWSUM. Ride well, and are dry. I am really over the top satified with my 26FS Regulator. Its laid out well, has handled any kind of sea I’ve been in i.e. chop, storms, and just snotty days in general. The console is big, and laid out well. The center console has over 6 feet of head room, and access to service everything in the console. You have a full transom because of the bracket, and it gives you a bigger boat ride. The only thing I dislike about the 26 is the step up on the deck going foward. I have hit my head on the T-top more times that I can remember coming back from the fish boxes. OVERALL YES, I would be a repeat customer with Regulator. Just MY opinion.
