Regulator vs Cape Horn vs Contender

What are ya’lls opinions on these three boats and what class would you put them in. I believe the Regulator is a top of the line, Contender is one tier lower and Cape Horn is in the class with the Tracker Sea Craft. I don’t really care for a Cape Horn becuase it is a glorified rolled edge offshore boat. Please give me ya’lls personal opinions and experiences with them.

No experience with the Regulato or Cape Horn, but the Contender is nice.
I do love the looks of a nice Cape Horn though.

Happy boatin’ y’all!!

I know it’s not on your list but last year while shopping I looked at many boats and settled on a Cobia. This is a line that was purchased by the Maverick Boat company. The same company that owns Pathfinder and Hughes boats. Those boats are top of the line in their class. The Cobia line was completely redesigned and are built along side the Pathfinders and Hughes boats in FL. I ended up with a 237 with twin Yamis and have been very happy. Take a look at them and see what you think.

Contender over Regulator. Cape Horn is only a decent boat. They have been updated, but they are still more wet than others. Yellowfin is nice as well. There aren’t a lot of boats that compete with Contender or Yellowfin. Regulator included.

I shoudl have let you guys know that I am not wanting buy a boat but trying to get an idea of what you guys think. I want to be the only dealer in Texas for Regulators and I was trying to get some ■■■■■■■■ from what you all thought. My main competition less cat boats would be contender and Cape Horn because that is what everyone has down here and a few fountains. We are a Key Yamaha dealer so it has to be a boat line that we can order with yamaha gauges and controls and packaged. Yellowfin is nice but they sell factory direct and I don’t believe in a boat that you can’t have warranty work done near by,

the biggest problems i see with a regulator are 1. it is a cored boat. 2 layers of glass with balsa wood in between. any penetrations that are not prepped well will be a problem down the road and regulator does not like to cover it under warranty 2.no under gunnel rod racks and very few gunnel mounted rod holders. 3. no more classics- everything they now sell is forward seating 4. step up on the floor 5. all warranty work MUST be done by selling dealer . what happens if you move?

Contender- speaks for itself. biggest problem is
lack of console space for a toilet that is not also full of wires and batteries. also prone to numerous stress cracks in radiuses and corners.

cape horn-minuses- not as steep deadrise as the others but almost there. lack of in floor storage. not as nice as the other 2 boats
plusses- great livewells. foam filled so they feel and ride like 1 solid piece. many rod holders everywhere you need them. great reputation for being a tuff boat with few hull problems and almost no stress cracking.

if you think the cape horn looks like a tracker boat than you better look again.

you want to be a dealer for an up and coming boat line look at the onslow bay.

Well I don’t want an up and coming boat line to sell. I want a line of a boats that already has a good name. Cape Horn to me looks like a glorified rolled edge offshore boat. I have been in one and is not that solid.

If I had to pick one of those to sell myself, it would be the Contender, hands down. People already know those boats and their reputations speak for themselves. Regulators are more expensive and the type of buyer for those is specific…I would think. Contenders, to me at least, tend to sell themselves.

Why is it that I never see Fountains listed in these comparisons?
Do people on this site have something against them, or are they just uncommon around here.

I’m going to pick up mine tomorrow by the way…
I’m about as giddy as a school girl that just got her first kiss!!

Happy boatin’ y’all!!

Hope you have a lot of gold chains and rings:sunglasses: I like Fountain boats, but all I can think of when I hear the word “Fountain” is GUIDO.

There are already a bunch of fountain dealers down here and like mentioned before I am a yamaha dealer and I do not think I can get fountains with yamahas pre rigged. Boat dealerships have territories so major brands like Fountain you will not see more then one in a city normally

Contenders are very popular around here. I think we can credit Tailwalker for that. They have been very successful over the years with very little competition from other big time cc manufacturers. Who sells Regulators around here? If I were you I would look at price points, sale prices, and models. Both are good boats and I doubt you will go wrong with either.

Behind this helm stands a sickness that not even a women can cure.

WD,
Scountin is correct and I think it would go over good on the gulf freeway:smiley:.My father lives in Friendswood and I am very familiar with the area a Contender dealer would be a plus.

Sure Plum will chime in pretty soon on the regulated bath tub:stuck_out_tongue:

New: buy a Yellowfin- hands down… only reason to not buy a new Yellowfin at their quality, performance and price relative to others is if you hate the higher bow because you’re a short guy or you like to gaff fish exclusively off the bow.

Used: buy a Contender- hands down… there are tons of them around for cheap right now, and they’ll hold the price you pay for them right now other than motors’ depreciation. This is because of the brand and how people perceive these boats. Contender builds tough boats that have enjoyed years of great reputation.

Yellowfin is hands down the best performing fishing boat you can get in the 31-36’ class dollar-per-dollar when comparing new boats to new boats. Rewind to 10 years ago, and the same could be said for Contender.

There are some other companies that have been making boats the last few years that are on par with Contender, IMO, but they tend to be more expensive and have less name recognition… Jupiter and Pursuit may actually be better… SeaVee, Jupiter and Pursuit may be better boats than Regulator- depends on which models. Fit and finish is better on the Jupiter and Pursuit than these other boats. Cape Horn is the roughest finished and the cheapest-made of all these. They are cheaper and will stay cheaper. Doesn’t mean they’re bad boats at all. However, like I said, there are many CHEAP Contenders around right now, and it makes them a good choice if you’re trying to get a used fishing boat that goes kinda fast.

I will not go into my personal opinion of Contenders since that is not what this thread is about, and I know many people think they’re the end all be all of offshore boats…

I thought he was just looking for a new product line at the dealership he works and Contender would be a good fit,but if he was looking personally yes the Yellowfin would be my vote was not trying to compare them.

I’m really liking my new 10 year old Regulator…

If I were rich, I’d get the new Yellowfin.

Just my opinion, but all day long.

If you are looking to open a dealership I would look at profit margins, etc. That will be the most important part. You are doing this I assume to make money. What kind of terms can you get for inventory, etc. Both Contender and Reg. are top notch boats. I would pick one of those and a lower tier boat like a Cape Horn or Sailfish for the buyers that don’t have $100k to spend for a 25 ft. boat. Just my two cents.

To answer you question, both Contender and Regs are top notch. I looked at both and went for the Reg hands down. No comparison for a head sea ride that is dry. If you ask a 100 people you will prob. get 50 that say Reg and 50 that say Contender. They are really very different riding boats. Contenders get on top of the wave and Regs go through them. Just preference for what kind of ride you like. I don’t know what the seas are like in Texas, but that will have a lot to do with it also. Good luck!
