Releasing trout

This past Spring, DNR requested that all trout be released this Spring & Summer due to the winter kill of trout. I have released all trout so far this year.

I’ll be coming down to God’s country in September and would like to keep a few trout for dinner.

Is the catch & release recommendation still in effect?

Thanks

yes

From a recent dnr visit I learned that its worse than any previous year on record. Hopefully our efforts along with a mild winter or two will get them back up to snuff!

4 more days… wonder if DNR will revise their recommendations.

They have requested trout be released until September 1…

Other states put moratoriums on some species hurt by the cold, seems to me SCDNR should have done the same if the trout are in such dire straights…I have never seen that ‘asking’ most people to do something gets positive results.

I caught a fair amount of trout last weekend but they were mostly 13-14" or so. Would that be fish hatched earlier this year or from last year?

After Sep 1 you may keep all the pictures you take of trout.

14" minimum and 10 per person…I suggest baking them with a light drizzle of olive oil, salt, pepper, just a pinch of dill, squeeze of fresh lemon, and a little butter on top. Catch 'em up and keep what you’ll eat (now or later).

Keep the trout, cook them, and have a great time. You are not going to hurt the population. Also keep a few more Red’s then normal because they could use a reduction.

Apparently they are not authorized to do so. I know there was a lot of wrangling on the topic on what to do. I don’t recall the details so I won’t try to repeat. Mike Able Sr. gave a description to a group of us at SSWA in early summer. Stop by Haddrell’s and ask.

I’ve been catching so many trout that if they make the 14" min i keep them. Problem has been catching any over 14", all have been bout 10-13. Caught prolly 25-30 trout last 2 trips and only 3 keepers.

DNR has emergency closure ability, but the phrasing of the law would basically require a shutdown of all inshore fishing if enacted (because of the potential bycatch of trout when fishing for drum, flounder, etc). Therefore, the voluntary “shutdown” was used. Hopefully, the wording of that law will be changed soon to only refer to keeping trout, but that’s up to the legislature.

Those 13" trout you are catching were spawned last summer. There’s some evidence out there that the largest fish are most susceptible to winter kills, so a higher proportion of the little guys probably made it. However, all sizes are drastically reduced compared to previous years.

they spawn twice…let them spawn.

if you’re gonna keep one…keep the ones that grunt as they’re the males.

Fish are too valuable to be caught only once.

Release the Trout! Fry all the Bass you can catch!!!
