This might be a dumb question but ill ask it anyways. Replacing steering wheel and a buddy thought he knew how and whacked away at bolt and messed threads all up on bolt so the nut won’t go back on. Ok that’s all going to need to be replaced but cant until i get the wheel off. Went and rented wheel puller like advised but didnt do any good. Any ideas?
I’m literally doing the same thing to my Carolina skiff. I just went and rented a jaw gear puller set, seems like it might work and I’ve heard a lot of people remove them with it.
Let me know how it works out. Yeah won this one at the redfish cup. Nice wheel…stainless steel with knob on it…

They can be tough to get off for sure, especially if they weren’t greased when installed.
First thing is to spay around it good with a penetrate like PB Blaster. Let it sit overnight and spray it again. Give it 24 hours. Then put your wheel puller on it and tension it up good, but not extreme. Now get a propane torch and heat around the hub, but not the shaft. This will make it expand a little. Tighten up the puller again. It should pop off. If this doesn’t work, spray it again with PB Blaster and repeat.
A good hammer frap can sometimes help, if it’s a rubber or wood hammer. Don’t hit it with a metal hammer. That can only hurt.

Depending on the thread size and pitch you may be able to purchase a rethreading die to repair the threads. There are also thread files that do the same thing but require a little finesse to get them right.

Went and got a claw puller…waiting for rain to go away to try it

Let that PB Blaster soak in while waiting on the rain to quit.

Didnt even spray it and with the claw puller popped off with a few turns or the wrench…very easy when using right tools lol

I didn’t have the same luck… I don’t know about you but I have a plastic wheel currently and its being a pain to get off, I even let it sit over night with PB blaster. When I went to start cranking down all it did was bend the wheel until it lost its grip.
We had a stainless one around on there and came right off.

You maybe able to use a hack saw and cut off the damaged threads and still have enough to tighten down the new wheel. If not Sounds like a good time for hydraulic steering if you don’t already have it.
Similar thing happened to me when replacing my steering wheel. When pulling the wheel off with gear puller it damaged the threads. It was basically either figure out a way to bypass those threads or get a new hydraulic steering unit. I ended up getting a large set of vice grips and mashing in the damaged threads until the nut would slide down and then thread on to the undamaged threads. Kind of a last ditch effort type of thing, but beats buying a new unit. Good luck
All we had to do is rethread the bolt with tool from AutoZone…took longer to rent tool then to do it. Everything’s on and looking good

Looks good, I’m still in the process of trying to remove my plastic one… I guess 20 years of saltwater will really make a steering wheel corroded.
Yeah had a buddy take a plastic one off before and he wasn’t planning on reusing it so we ended up have to drill it out…was a pain

Not a bad idea. I might just cut it off.
Yeah might be a little easier and a little bit of stress relief at same time haha
