Boat axles
Ok…so Donnie was looking at the trailer on the 212 sea hunt and there is a lot of surface rust( he says the main part is still solid) on the axles…but while looking at it he said the spindles ,nuts etc look bad…as in bad enough to be unsafe …so…do we try to fix those or replace the axles? I would rather replace the axles as hate to take chance with ourselves and the boat if it’s going to be a problem down the road…literally…the trailer is aluminum and in great shape on the frame part, looks brand new. We replaced the brakes and rotors two years ago with stainless,as well as all four tires. looks like we need to replace ubolts with stainless too on the trailer…
Anyone done this lately? Know what is the best route to go? or recommend someone to use? Or guesstimate on cost?

I just helped FirstBorn replace his axle on Friday. He got the torsion axle and hubs direct from Wesco and saved a couple hundred bucks by picking them up from the factory. We had to drill some new holes as they did not line up perfectly with the old bolt locations, even though it was from Wesco. Single axle replaced with thte boat off the trailer at the neighborhood landing took a little over an hour.
When he called them they originally quoted him $500 each. When he asked about shipping they said shipping was included in that price, so he asked if it was cheaper for him to pick up. It was.
Not a bad price for 5 or 10 more years of peace of mind.
Talk to Jeremy at Wesco, he will set you up. It was a galvenized torsion axle with spindles and hubs included. They are right off exit 115 in Columbia. Three hours round trip, $48 in fuel and saved a large shipping bill; plus I got it that day…really can’t go wrong with that.

He is a pain in my butt sometimes…what he is really saying is…we have to make a road trip because I don’t want to let someone do something nice for me…lol

Thanks Chris! Will post up and decide when we hear back. Heard there’s a pretty big shipping charge…so Probablly will do a pick up in the pick up to save a little…but will keep your offering mind too…
You might try Fields Ornamental on Cross County Road. They replaced everything but the wheels under my double axle trailer for very reasonable. They also used heavier than original. I was very pleased with the work, price, and speed of the work. When I came to pick it up they had even power washed and painted the wheels so they looked new too. He told me he did that for 2 reasons. One was looks and two was so if the new bearings started leaking I would know it. The wheels had thrown grease and grease stains all over them so new grease might go unnoticed. Again I was very pleased with their work.

PS Since they have everything to do the work you might check with them for your axles if you want to do the work yourself.
I just got two torsion axles from Sporttrail in Mississippi they are $290.00 for the 3500# axles and $450.00 for 6000# axles with hubs and stainless mounting hardware, shipping was $103.00 got them in two days.
