replacing fly line?

how frequently do you do it? Mine’s a couple of seasons of hard fishing old. I haven’t noticed any problems with it yet, but then again it might be like eyesight, you don’t notice it’s getting bad until it gets really bad. Any rule of thumb rec’s?

edit: dovetailing with that, what’s the crowd favorite for fly line?

Simple line care tip. Wash the line using Dawn detergent(great for grease which is a number one soiler of fly lines), Rinse and dry, then coat with plastic protectant (Armor All, etc,. Orvis use to sell 303 packets for this)

you dont have to worry about scent coming off the line afterwards?

The protectant should be dry. You still have 8’-9’ of leader away from your line with a floater and 3’-4’ with a sinking line.

i have one spool that has gotten pretty stiff. i may try to rehab it or replace it. i know there are some higher end but i am happy with scientific angler ultra 4 saltwater 40-50 bucks.

we dont need no reservations we dont need no cruise control

Flats - run the line thru your fingers to check for abrasions, etc. I seem to find damage from grass, oysters, coral. Keep the old fly line for use in rough conditions where casting isn’t a huge deal - like steelhead in the winter.
