Replacing pull start rope

anyone on here ever have the pleasure of replacing a rope on a
1996 Johnson 30 2 stroke? I thought it would be easy till I tryed
my luck. I ll wind it up it up tight the put the role through but the
Spring doesnt have the energy to take the rope in but when i let
It go it will spin back to rest?

Any help would be great.

On lawn mowers I always have to open the unit (being careful not to let the spring fly out) and wind by hand. Otherwise I can’t get it tight enough. Try YouTube for examples. There are a bunch of examples on there. This is a pretty good generic one:

Thanks

You can always make money but you cant make time.

This may not be the proper way but I spin the plate around enough so that it will have enough recoil to retract the rope. Once you get it where you want, put some vice grips on it to hold it in place.

Now I install the rope. Insert the rope and feed it through until you can get it to come out through the slot just to the North of the center bolt in this pic. Then tie a good knot in it. Release the vise grips and it should retract. Then just bolt it back on top of the motor.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

Forgot, whatever you do, don’t open it up. The pressure that spring is under can really hurt you if it releases and is a b**ch to put back in.

It’s worth it to pay someone to do it.

Just do what DueSouth said. Its really nothing.
