Replacing through hull bolts

Looks like there was supposed to be some type of rubber grommet around the through hull bolts that mount the motor to the hull. I was looking at the motor mount over the weekend and it appears that the grommet is wearing away. I want to take the bolts out, replace with new ones and possibly fill the hole with 5200.

Here is the question. Can I take one bolt out at a time without having to support the motor?

Yes, that will work, but you probably don’t need to replace them with new ones. Also don’t use 5200. A good quality silicone sealant will work just fine. Those rubber grommets are just washers to help with vibration, not sealing the through hull.

Throw any sort of gromets away. They’re a joke.
Use 4000UV or a product made by Boat Life in Charleston called Life Seal. They won’t turn yellow after a few years. 5200 will be permanent and pull gelcoat off your Scout whenever you change motors and want to reseal the holes. 5200 is for more permanent things like below waterline thru hulls and scuppers. It’s closer to epoxy in how it should be used than a sealant or bedding agent.

Thanks for responses. Only reason considering new bolts is the old ones are mismatched. Thread pattern is different on the bolts.

I didn’t want to start taking bolts out and sealing and have the motor move and not be able to match the holes back up.
