Replacing water pump - kit or just impeller?

Since I don’t have any reliable maintenance history on my motor (2006 Yammy 150TXR) I’m planning on replacing the water pump because in my experience overheating and running lean are the most likely things to kill an otherwise properly treated two stroke in a hurry and I don’t want to take any chances.

From what I can gather from my service manual, diagrams, and of course the all-knowing internet the only part that is likely to fail is the impeller, and there are no consumable parts (ie gaskets) associated with changing it, since everything is sealed by o-rings. So should I buy a kit that has the housing, plate gasket, bushings, bolts, etc or just replace the impeller for about half the cost? Is there really any benefit to replacing all the other stuff, assuming there is no obvious wear or other problems?

I guess I already know the obvious answer, if you’re going to do it, do it right and replace everything, but just seems like a little extra time and money that could be used for something else if I can just pop in a new impeller and be good to go.

Anybody have any experience or thoughts? thanks!

Kit.

It’s six years old and you don’t know the history. Do the kit and you will …

The price of the impeller is high; the whole kit is well worth the additional $.

kit it is. I pretty much knew that, but sometimes you just have to hear it from somebody else.

Thanks guys!

Wolfie, do the kit. You might want to check into it but a friend of mine had an ice bag cover water pick up and scored a cyl. Insurance company would have covered repair if he had a receipt of him having water pump maintenance done.

I could be totally wrong in this, but if you carry insurance on your boat check with your insurance company.

have the engine serviced and the waterpump replaced, and you know what you have and can move forward with maintenance from a good starting point
