Report from Saturday

To those not interested in witty banter here is the Readers Digest version of Saturday’s trip:

Fished Chas 60 due to sea conditions. Caught 5 nice sea bass (released several shorts), 1 VERY large grunt, 2 sharpnose sharks, released 5 juvenile gag groupers, released an assortment of other bottom fish and pinfish. Lost 1 very large reef donkey at the boat and 2 unknowns, 1 of which was likely a 'cuda that needed venting (kidding). Used cigar minnows and squid, best bait was the tail portion of the cigar minnows: responsible for all the sea bass and most of the grouper.

The complete details are as follows. I tell the tale both to help the newbies and to remind others not to get arrogant and therefore careless.

The trip started on Friday with my wife, who loves to fish and is usually a trooper about these things, deciding not to come along. I am beginning to belive she is clairvoyant. Bad Omen number 1. A face full of gas while topping off the tanks was bad omen #2, but it allowed me to see that my trailer tag was loose and therefore fix it, so I figured the good luck was coming back. Picked up our daughter and hit the road to Charleston. Trailer blew a tire, luckily I had a good spare. Lesson learned: Break your lugs free a couple times a year! I got up close and personal with the fender trying to break one of the lugs free. :face_with_head_bandage: Now I am hot, bothered, dirty, sweaty, and running behind. I-26 became a parking lot further frustrating us. I called Darryl and Scott at Haddrels to see if we could work something out as I was afraid I would not make it before closing time. They were as polite and helpful as you could possibly ask for. As a business owner, I am doubly appreciative of their efforts. I hate staying past quitting time myself if I can avoid it, but do so to take care of the customer. They went above the call and took care of me. I was starting to feel good about now. Got to the hotel only to find there was no room for the trailer. Lesson learned: find out about parking before you go

Thanks for the post.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge…Proverbs 1:7

we woke up sat morning and hit the snooze after a quick check on the edisto buoy. got up fished off the dock for a while behind the house, checking the buoy data every hr. Around 10 we decided we were going to stick our noses out in the sound and see what it was doing…We pushed it out around 32mph till the last sea buoy and headed to the edisto 40 for live bait and had to slow down a little. got bait and then headed to 90’ around 28mph. first stop showed a boat sitting on where we planned to fish. moved around to some other spots and thought we were going to fish and sea sickness hit a crew member…did get him to lay down for about an hour of fishing and were able to pick up some knot heads, triggers, pinks and 4 nice ARS. Bite was just starting to turn on when we went ahead and headed back to shore. It sux watchin someone suffer from sickness. ran back in at 34. We though it was a great day on the way but didn’t leave till late after watching the buoy. Think i even seen it get down to 2.6 @ 8sec sometime while we were out. we were south running out of St Helena sound don’t know if it made a difference but i thought it was a great day on the way mind the sea sickness…

Murray,

Glad you were able to have a little fun, sorry about the sea sickness! Does suck!

Another good one is:

Click on the tabs at the top to get seas, wind, period etc and hit the back or pause button to see where it is for the time frame you’ll be on the water. Its been pretty spot on for the few times I’ve been able to go this year.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

4-6’ on a 22? Sounds more like surfing than fishing! lol.

Great story- could you put a list at the bottom of the report with all “the lessons learned”- i was loving them but i lost count and it would educate and remind alot of people of necessary stuff if we had a list to check out- thanks for the post

Stillalive28,

Surfing or cork bobbing

We have been fishing out of Columbia for 20 years and we have run into a lot of the situations you described. I can surely relate to what you are saying. Sure was a good story. If looking for another boat to ride out with let us know in the future.

Rooney, will do! we are headed to myrtle in about 2 weeks. Never been there, but my son and his family will be there so we are taking the boat and see what happens.
