It was windy to say the least. Difficult to fish. Took out our Golden Retriever out for the first time. I had to stop fishing with a bobber. He wanted to jump in and chase the bobber on every cast. Switched to a drop shot rig and Phoenyx was better but still wanted to chase the sinker and bait. Caught 3 blue crabs. Going out Wed. again. Leaving the pooch at home.
I made the mistake of having an over eager dog around one time while fishing. Took my eyes of the bait for not one second and she had a hook in the tongue. Fortunately, not much harm was done, but it was a little scary… Did you put any crab on a hook? Excellent redfish bait right there if you can manage to net them before they let go

My retriever does the exact same thing, it drives me nuts. If I fish with a cork I have to tie him in the boat. He thinks it’s his duty to go get it. And if it goes down it’s his duty to rescue it. Just his nature. I throw it, he goes after it. He don’t know a cork from a ball. And then he runs through the mud and cuts his feet on the oysters. He’s good for a lot of things but fishing isn’t one of them.

Mine nearly drown.Well maybe that’s pushing it but he jumped off the dock and swam out into the ICW to “fetch” a crab trap float , Gotta say I was pretty impressed,he was NOT giving up. I had to launch a kayak,paddle out and wrestle him in!

To make matters worse, my wife has this long flexible plastic long distance ball throwing stick thing that looks enough like a fishing rod for dog. He’s trained to chase that one, doesn’t get it when he can’t chase mine. I usually just leave him home.

Point was he wasn’t stoppin’ ! But he couldn’t pull a crab trap against the tide ,he sure tried. Gotta love the heart of a good pup.

Yep, there ain’t no quit in mine either, he doesn’t stop until he does what he set out to do. I can only hope it’s what I wanted him to do. Usually it is, sometimes not. I can teach him almost anything, except not to chase the cork when I throw it.
