Buy a bag of super flukes and pack of gamakatsu 4/0 EWG weighted hooks…it’s all you need. If you really need to scratch that itch, then buy a solid chrome super spook. If they don’t have them Academy does… and if you get you one of those parker spoons you can cast that to schooling fish as well.

Ooops… flukes need to be white! Not white and grey. Not White and chartreuse. Not white with sparkles… JUST PLAIN OLE WHITE!

Happy Bob, I’ve got a technique to jig heavy metal without wearing your arm out. First of all, I don’t jig until I’m marking heavily. When I am, I drop to depth and place the butt of the rod and the reel inside my left knee with the foam ahead of the reel resting on my knee. I pump down and up with the top of the rod butt and can go all day without fatiguing. It works!

Murraymaker, have you noticed a difference in the size of fish you catch when using a 5" super fluke compared to a 7" magnum super fluke? Or do you just always use one size or the other?
One time I was fishing the 5" and consistently catching fish just under the limit and moved up to the 7" to see if I could catch the bigger arches on the screen. It made no difference- still small fish.
(Of course, I have no way of knowing for sure if the bigger arches were actually bigger fish- but I was hoping it was!)

What’s your experience been?

One suggestion on buying flukes and spooks: get them NOW! When the rockfish start schooling, you won’t be able to find them.

Lol…NOPE…you know how I feel when I see your plugs. Drives me crazy to see you grab whatever can of spray paint you feel like using that night and spray them up…lol… but I know they catch fish and that’s all that matters.

Believe me I have almost don’t it a few times and decide against it. I do have a couple bright oranges ones around I think. They have produced as well…that plug looks good. Glow in the dark paint?

Chip, I still have plenty of paint left if you need it!

LOL. Actually, that was the only one I caught on it. Both same size. But…I only caught one last night on the red/wht that’s been working good for me also, so not a real good test. Fish had lockjaw. Plowed through tons of them and only landed 2, 3 or 4 knock downs and lost a little one on the way in.

Should start in September. By the end of September and early October, it should really be on. I absolutely LOVE fishing in October. Can’t wait for cooler temps.

What is the main way to fish then?

Planer boards and freelines. You may have to weight the freelines and board lines in early October but by nov it’s full on shallow water fishing. (Less than 10’) for me anyway…

LM have you searched this forum? These topics go back YEARS AND YEARS. Occasionally I will search and find something new I have missed over the years.

October is usually still big water fishing for me. I like to drift anywhere from Bomb on up to the elbow area with a combination of deep downrods and freelines that are mostly weighted. Spoons are also a big part of the arsenal. I don’t usually dig out the planers until after turnover in early November. Then, like most, I’m uplake pulling skinny water.

Like Chip, aka Murraymaker, in October I’ll start pulling and going shallower. But almost all of what I know, I learned from him anyway so go figure.

Everyone has their own style. Oct I am from spence to the gap. But mainly closer to spence. I might run 1 set with out weight. 1 set will have an ounce ans the other set will have 2oz weights. I just hate downrods…lol…big baits pulled shallow is my game of choice. I don’t care what month it is. I will find somewhere to do it. It might be in TN, upper end of the hill or even on the saluda below murray. Somewhere you can pull big baits shallow year round
