I took out Spoon, Rusty and his friend from Jersey Ray. We fished from Goat to all the way across to the cow pasture, drifting and spotlocking down rods and spoons until noonish. It was slow, but we boxed a dozen for Rusty and Ray to dress out and enjoy. Biggest was around 7 pounds with mostly 16-22 inchers. We caught them 30-75 feet deep.

Thanks for the help Fogman. What kind of spoons were you using, And were you just jigging them up and down?

I got hot out there today. Those fish really made us work for them!
The best part of the day for me, other than being with good friends, and of course winding in a few fish, was the boat check by the SCDNR guys. They were very courteous. They came off plane a long way from us and approached quietly at idle speed, so as not to spook our fish or rock the boat. They checked everything and left as quietly as they had approached. It probably wouldn’t have mattered to the fish if they had come in at full throttle, since the fish seemed to have lockjaw for most of the day.
I’ve been using a spoon that I bought a couple of years ago. Only have one like it, don’t remember its’ name, and can’t find anymore anywhere. It looks similar to a herring and is about 4 3/4" long, weighing about 4 ounces. So far I’ve caught stripers, hybrids and largemouth jigging it.
The spoon I’ve been using the past few weeks is the Kastmaster XL. It’s 4 inches long and weighs 1.5 ounces and is available at Basspro. It’s a lighter version of the Deadly Dick. I’ve been using the one with blue prism on 1 side with silver on the other- very effective!

Thanks guys really appreciate the help, hopefully I can get out their soon and catch a fish. I dont know what it is with me and those stripers but ive put so much time and money into them and cant catch even one. Been about 10 times all using herring and going to where the people on the internet tell me but still no luck.

Trolled the big water last night. Put in at dusk and picked up 2 immediately, then took a couple of hours to get 3 more. All were decent legit keepers except 1. Fished at 50-55’, but marked lots of fish at a wide range of depths.
Looks like I may need to reread that thread about removing herring scales…and that’s after not having live bait on the boat for almost 3 months.
Pic is from near mouth of Jakes.

Thank you. Which one exact? Im sorry for all the questions ive just never trolled and would like to find a lure that catches fish. Also do you have to use down riggers or lead core?

They don’t make the ones I use anymore and they don’t dive very deep. Pick up a couple of stretches and I’ll let you know when I start getting them trolling in the 20-25’ range…probably around or shortly after labor day.

They do not make the slivers anymore that skiff is pulling. You may be able to find them on ebay. And yes these need to be ran with downriggers or leadcore. If your looking for a lure that doesn’t need either leadcore or downriggers look into the really big grandma lures.
The top 4 are rapala slivers. They don’t make this size anymore but are awesome downriggers baits.
The bottom 3 are some of my favorites. The bottom is a shallow diving storm bait and has caught more fish than any other lure in the pic. Also I couldn’t find it but I have a shallow diving gray cotton cordell redfin that produces well. All of these lures go on downriggers.

I went out yesterday morning with my friend from work, John. We finally got on the water about 6:15 after he overslept.
The first and biggest catch of the day was a 14 pounder. Unfortunately, it was my main fishing buddy, Porkchop, my wiener dog. He managed to snag a hook in his leg from John’s rig, that he had set up for surf fishing. Luckily, it was just in the skin and the hook was sharp, so it was just a matter of clipping the hook & pulling it out. I was more freaked out trying to think of how I was going to tell the wife. I decided, since there was no major injury, “what happens on the lake stays on the lake”. I made John vow to secrecy.
Anyway, I caught a 7 1/2 pounder at 8:00 and that was it. Fished areas below Spence. Marked a lot of fish, but no takers. We were using herring on down rods, and I about wore my arm out with a spoon. (I definitely need to get a different rod for that.)

Took dad fishing saturday morning and had the limit by 6:45. Fish were small but it was the first time we were able to fish together this year. all fish were caught on herring using downrods.

I ended up with 5 friday evening fishing deep humps in the river channel with live herring. I was also jigging with a rapala bait, but never got a bite on it.

Lol…NOPE…you know how I feel when I see your plugs. Drives me crazy to see you grab whatever can of spray paint you feel like using that night and spray them up…lol… but I know they catch fish and that’s all that matters.
Believe me I have almost don’t it a few times and decide against it. I do have a couple bright oranges ones around I think. They have produced as well…that plug looks good. Glow in the dark paint?

Nah. I’ve thought about that glow paint, but never messed with it. This is just the fluorescent stuff like people paint signs with.
Tonight was going to take out a couple of guys from out of town that I’ve been working with last couple of weeks. They decided to stay and work late and I decided I’m not.
Putting in about 8 at the dam and fishing a couple of hours if anyone wants to go.
