Hey just wanted to get some ideas. Looking to either repower my 2001 Aquasport, it has a 250 single and I’m looking to put twin 150’s. The tramsom is rated for 300 hp. Anyone have an Idea on how much it would cost to re-rig it? Or should I just sell it and buy a newer one? Also any imput on good quality center consoles like which builder to go with? looking to stay around 25ft range? thanks for any imput…Catch um up…Mike
Why do you want to repower? Is the 250 to slow or is it getting old? Twins are going to cost more period. Twice the maintenance and probably 50 to 75% more than going back with a single. They will weigh more too.
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!
Just looking for some backup if when I’m offshore and my single dies that’s it. At least with doubles I can limp in?
There are a pair of Yammi F150s for sale in the classifieds I just saw.

What size is your boat? Sounds like it is less than 25 ft. based on hp you are talking about. For that sized boat, I wouldn’t spend the money on twins. The reality is most of the issues people are having now is fuel related and two engines won’t help this. Get a good 4 stroke and spend the money you save on a good sat. phone and epirb.
I repowered my 241 Mako with twins and I will tell you it will cost a lot more than you think. If you plan on keeping the boat forever then do it. If not, you are far better off selling your boat and buying one with twins.
Repowered this past Spring. Replaced the old 2 stroke Evinrude 150’s Ocean Pros with Suzuki 4 stroke 225’s. I removed the old engines and prepped the transom bracket for rigging myself. Total cost…including rigging/installation was a little over 36k. I’m not complaining. The boat absolutely flies, my fuel economy is better , and you can have an almost normal level conversation at WOT (very quiet). Great work by Butler Marine!(Anyone want 2 Evinrudes cheap ?)

SeaTow and TowBoatUS have taken the place of twin engines or a kicker motor for me…
Annual membership to these plus yearly fee for SPOT satellite messenger to tell them exactly where to come to tow you in are both cheaper than annual maintenance on another late model motor.
EPIRB can’t be replaced by SPOT or a towing service membership, but a twin or kicker to “limp in” with can certainly be replaced by a towing service if you’ve got a device to tell them exactly where you are and you’ve got the proper anchor and rode to HOLD YOU IN PLACE while you’ve got no engine power.
Both tow services have high rise VHF antennas that can pick you up loud and clear offshore. SPOT gets thru if the VHF system is temporarily messed up by a storm or something.
Redundancy is always a good thing, but like someone else said the problem often is battery or fuel related these days.

Talk to the tow services… Either of them can probably tell you they tow just as many twins from offshore as they do singles…

Thanks for the imput guys. I think I’ll stick with my single for now. I do have spot and boat U.s. membership. Does anyone know how far out sea tow will go? I was under the impression that they only went out 35mi?
Crouch has told me he has made tows from the stream before so… I think if they turned down a tow it would be for a safety issue… Sea Tow guys are top notch and I don’t believe they have an arbitrary mileage they won’t go past… Call them and ask that is the only way to get the info strait from the horses mouth.

I believe BoatUS is 75 or 100 miles.
I’m agreeing with Phin big time. I recently got a SPOT and I’ve had Tow Boat for my towing service for a while. I feel comfortable with my one motor.
Being superstitious is bad luck.
Thanks guys, you’ve helped me make up my mind. I’m sticking with the single until I can afford another boat…Someday? I already have the spot and a tow pkg. So looks like I’ll see ya on the water. Catch um up…Mike

i believe they will do what is necessary to get a member back home.
with that said,i would get a big single(these new motors are (**() bullet proof, except for the ethanol, thats our governments fault, not the motors) and the tow service, the money you save can go towards more fishing trips…
Wise decision to not waste the money. I honestly think we will see twin screw set-ups going away in the next 10 years unless you have a really big boat. They already have 350 horses, imagine what they will have a couple years from now. Plus, gas isn’t ever going to get back to $1 a gallon and people seem to be more environmentally aware now. My next offshore boat will be a single diesel with bow thruster.
