Repowering

What do you guys think I would have to pay for a good used Yamaha OX66 250? I am thinking due to budget probably 2001-2004 year range.

Also, it is for a 23ft CC, I am torn between hanging the above single 250hp on it or trying to find a good set of used smaller twins to put on it. I would like the confidence of having twins as I want to venture farther out than I have been fishing. 35-40 miles. Thoughts?

I just picked this boat up and it has a pair of old 1989 Merc 135s on it. One apparently runs OK and the other has 125lbs in each cylinder but needs money spent on it to get it running. Torn between putting money in an old motor or some of the above ideas.

Rick

what’s the boat you’re putting it on.

Personally I would take a single Yamaha 250 OX66 over twin mercs ANY DAY!! There are alot of OX66s on the market right now as people are updating to F250s. You should not have a problem finding one in the $2500 to $4000 range with low hours.

Behind this helm stands a sickness that not even a women can cure.

It’s a very large 1990 23 Center Console Sea Ray. The hull is solid and so is the trailer, it will make a beautiful boat. You stated exactly what i was thinking…a really good OX66 250 from $4-5K and I’d be riding.
Do you think it would be plenty of power? I just need 35-40 mph.
Also, are there differences that I should look for when shopping these motors. I don’t know if one year was better than another and if one year gave better fuel consumption?

Thanks for all your help
Rick

How about a 225 OX66? I’ve been toying with the ideas of selling, trading or repowering. It runs great and pushes my 22’ Grady most excellently. I’d be willing to discuss it if you’d like.

We may be onto something. What year is it and anything else you can tell me?
I will PM you before I do anything in the next few weeks.
