Resturant warning

First off I am not bashing this resturant just warning people of a dangerous item on there menu. My wife and I met friends from out of town at Coast resturant the other night. It was my first time there. One of the items that they had on there menu was escolar fish. It was there feature item was all over their menu. This fish is very dangerous for human consumption. It has been banned in japan since 1977 yet our FDA says it is ok. It is known to cause Keriorrhea which is a digestive problem that cause anal leakage, vomiting, abdominal craps. And last very long cause your body can not digest the waxes in this fish. Some resturants use it as their “tuna” as well. So just a heads up if you go to this resturant. Just don’t order their tuna or escolar .

That is frightful [:0][:0] I’d never heard of escolar until I read this. I looked it up for myself and it seems to be something this Cracker doesn’t ever want to eat! Thanks for the heads up on that:smiley:

I wonder why any restaurant would sell it?

Sound like a food borne hangover:smiley::wink: with those symptoms[:0]

Sellsfish? what say you?

Escolar, aka white tuna, aka butterfish has wax ester, which you can’t digest. It’s also, in fact, delicious. It’s only bad if you eat over a certain amount of it. Unless you’re extremely sensitive to it, a restaurant portion won’t bother you. I have eaten over the recommended amount before and lemme tell you…orange oil. It won’t hurt you, but I would just avoid light colored couches. That is all

I believe the FDA reissued an advisory back in 2007. Due to the rise in cases of misbranded seafood products, the FDA will most likely compile reports of gempylotoxin, and ban the commerce of the fish.

Funny how Japan will ban a fish for Gempylotoxin, but not Tetrodotoxin, which will kill.

quote:
Name of the Toxin: Gempylotoxin

Nature of Acute Disease:
Gempylotoxism or Gempylid Fish Poisoning or Keriorrhea (Keriorrhoea)
FDA Statement on Consumption of Escolar and Oilfish: "There are naturally occurring toxins in some species that do not involve marine algae. Escolar (Scientific Name Lepidocybium flavobrunneum), and its relative Oilfish or Cocco (Scientific Name Ruvettus pretiosus) contains a strong purgative oil, that when consumed can cause diarrhea known as Gempylid Fish Poisoning or Gempylotoxism. FDA advises against the sale of the fish in intrastate/interstate commerce, and requests that seafood manufacturers/processors should inform potential buyers/sellers, etc. of the purgative effect associated with the consumption of these fish.

The FDA district offices have been informed to report any illnesses associated with the consumption of these fish to CFSAN.

If there are further questions regarding escolar and relative species, please contact the Division of Seafood Safety, Office of Food Safety, CFSAN, 301-436-2300."

Escolar is lovely. In raw form I will eat “super white” tuna any day over yellowfin. It is said that you should eat no more than 6oz at a time…and I doubt you’re getting much more than 4oz in restaurants where you can find it.

It truly is a tasty fish.

I think I’ll pass on that anal leakage thing though. Grouper don’t do that to ya :sunglasses:

have had that fish at that restaurant a couple years back to celebrate my new job… went out on a sunday night before work.

googled the fish (to see if i could catch em … was delicous!) when I got home, and spent my first day at work hovering over my office chair wondering when the bomb would drop! hahah

Anyway, it is a tasty fish and cooked on a grill and in reasonable servings you should be fine. Pan + big fillets will result in the “olestra” reaction those chips gave people a few years back.

Have eaten, enjoyed, and would eat again.

delicious or not, why would you ever knowingly eat anything that may or may not cause anal leakage? That’s like playing with fire!

Narcosis

Narcosis is dead on! Just go to the store and buy some fish sticks and a box of EXLAX and some TP.[:0] If you want to pretty it up, eat a bunch of red beets:wink:

Damm Easy that’s funny…

What's the difference between that and Taco Bell? I'd rather have a delicious meal that MAY cause some problems than some cheap fast food garbage that probably WILL cause the trots.

Flaming explosive diarrhea is totally different than what you get from eating too much escolar.

I think the key word is “leakage”.

Yeah; Kinda like the kid that goes to sleep with his head on a school desk. When he wakes up, there is a puddle of drool! Now you all know, that kid was YOU[:0]:face_with_head_bandage::wink:

I am sitting here laughing my ass off! I had…lets say a BAD experience with Escolar! But I still love it and only eat 4 ounces at a time. What is amazing about it is that people of Asian decent have the enzyme to digest the insoluble wax, while people of Anglo decent do not. It grills up awesome, and is labeled as “white tuna” at some sushi houses. Make sure by asking if the fish is Escolar or Albacore. It won’t hurt you, but dang…you sure will screw up a bathroom!

I have had it raw several times with no problems. Just have enough to taste and you will be fine.

I ate it a couple of years ago, was pissed the portion was so small, now im glad it was!!!
