Retriever help

I have a 6 month old Boykin and training has been going great till recently. I introduced him to frozen dove and that’s were the problem started. He is steady as can be and will look for it and is pretty good at finding them but will not give them back. When I retrieve with bumpers he’s almost perfect. He finds it and will try everything he can to hold on to the bird. I’m doing this with a check cord so I’ve tried the pinching ear and food methods but he is still lockjaw. I usually end up having to just pry his mouth open to get it out and keep him from eating it. Does anytime have any suggestions on what to do??

I bought one of these for our 6 month old Springer pup and it has worked wonders. It makes her a whole different dog, even when the collar is off.

Wrap the bird in barbwire, It will keep the dog from mouthing
it to hard.

Cut a coat hanger into several pieces at pretty sharp 45 degree or so angle and run it through the bird at different angles with the points just below or just above the feathers. Then work him. Had a lab that had the similar problem as a pup and after the coat hanger pieces he only picked birds up by their feet and wings the rest of his life

I haven’t tested it yet but I just got a shock collar from Snagshout/amazon for $20. At that cost it’s worth a try.

To be more specific I got this https://www.snagshout.com/offers/hillpow-remote-control-dog-training-shock/10625a

Only need it for 1 dog but I figured it would be nice to have a backup in case one broke. It has a light, vibration, sound, and shock options at like 300 yards.

FYI snagshout is a good website to get some decent discounts. In return for the discount you have to give an honest review. It gives you a discount code that you input on amazon, where the product is actually purchased, before you finalize the purchase. I’ve gotten discounts for 20% to 80%.
