Reverse issue on 40 hp Yamaha

For a couple months now my reverse will not engage without a fight. About 50% of the time it will make the grinding, shift noise, and I don’t push it anymore. The other half of the time it engages pretty willingly. Fortunately, it hasn’t been getting worse.

Anyone know the right way to adjust the linkage on the throttle cables? Or have any insight? Thanks a lot for any suggestions.

unscrew teh black loop on the end of the shift cable 1-2 revolutions and see how that works.
often when the cables get a little old, they get play in them, and they dont shift properly anymore

Appreciate the advice. Definitely seems like it’s a slight adjustment, like you suggest. Will try that out tomorrow.
