Ribbon Fish

Fished the upper Wando on 5/26. Caught a big red on topwater right off the bat. I knew this would be the kiss of death and I was right. Didn’t catch another red or trout all day. Around noon, I started throwing a Rat-L-Trap. At one spot, I must have caught a dozen Ribbon Fish in the 18" range. I’ve fished the Wando hard for almost 20 years and had never even seen one of these things. What a nasty looking specimen.

You sure it was a ribbon fish? They are found in deep water (300+ feet) and are not around this area. Do you have any pictures of it?

My dad caught one in the Cooper River many years ago. I was just a kid and we had no idea what it was.

You sure?

I caught one in a cast net under the 174 bridge (Edisto) last year while throwing for menhaden.

Schools of hundreds of small ribbonfish can be found around Castle Pinckney this time of year. 2 weeks ago while fishing around north Bulls Bay, Fishcall and I watched seagulls picking up small ribbonfish for about an hour. If what you caught had LARGE teeth it could have been a Cutlass fish. Otherwise it was prolly a Ribbon.

I catch them from time to time but it’s never been more than on per day.

Sorry, but they are all around here. We catch them on the shrimp boats also in 20 feet of water. Ask any local shrimper.

They are here. When fishing for spanish a few weeks ago near the middle ground there were good size schools of them that the gulls and spanish were after.

ribbon fish are fairly common to the carolinas depending on season. They can be offshore fish but often wander up estuaries

this comes up every year, pat’s got it. atlantic cutlassfish (Trichiurus lepturus) is often called a ribbonfish (true ribbonfish are a different family and are deep-sea). original common name: largehead hairtail.

most popular as king baits here, they are oily fish that are often smoked and eaten in other parts of the world.

Caught one off my dock with a cast net last week. When I was pulling up the net I thought it was a piece of chrome.

My little girl caught one few years ago during the airing of SHARK WEEK she was happy with all the teefs. For her it qualified as a nasty critter : )

I caught 4 about a week and a half ago up in the Ashley River in roughly 3-4’ of water on the outgoing tide in my cast net, first time I had ever seen them as well.

My buddy did take a picture of one of the ribbon fish that I caught. I’ll try and post it later. They were all very chrome looking.
