Rifle scope set up

Thanks again to everyone on the shotgun side.

Currently I have a .223/5.56 with a simple 3-9x40 scope. I have a very hard time seeing out 200 yards and beyond. Seeing an 8 inch white plate at 350 yards is very tough. That just isn’t good enough.

I think the rifle will make it, but the scope needs to be changed.

Size: 50mm, 1" tube,
Price range: Willing to invest, but not get stupid.
Functions: To see 400 yards clearly in good light, 250 yards clearly in not great light.

The Vortex 3x12x56mm with 30mm tube is a good scope. It is the Vortex Cross Fire II Hog Hunter. It even has a fire dot illuminated reticle that they call the Vbrite reticle. I just got one for my 243. Very nice scope for $299.

There are a lot of scopes out there that fit the bill for what you are asking. The best bang for the buck in optical quality, features and repeatability is the Weaver Super Slam series of scopes, Leupold VX-3 optical quality, better light gathering and 1/2 the price. Vortex makes good optics but I wouldn’t go below the Viper line. Most all quality optics these days will allow you to see 400yds in good light. The 250yds in failing light is where you are going to need to step up in quality. In the $1,000 range, Meopta and Trijicon are fantastic. Under $500-$1K most are about the same, find an old Bushnell 4200, great low light scopes.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Is the 9 power zoom not enough, or is the optical quality of the glass lacking? What scope is it now? And is this an AR?

I have a Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50 lapped in an American Defense MFG quick release mount I am going to be selling soon. Might fit your needs, and perfect for an AR, but might exceed your budget.

I plan on going with a Nightforce on this rifle. The Vortex is good, no problems at all with it, I just want to step it up for some more low light long distance shooting.

Some pics. If interested, send me a PM and we can discuss price…

I recently bought a NF NXS 5.5X22X50 MOAR-T and put it on my 700 7mm08. I put the Trijicon 5X20X50 that was on the 700 on my Savage 10 PC. In all honesty, the NF is about the same for light gathering as the Trijicon, maybe not quite as good. The reticle is much more precise, adjustments are better and there is a whole lot more elevation travel for dialing in distances for popping steel at long range. It’s great optic as far as features and clarity but then again so is the Trijicon Accupoint. Were I looking for light gathering, capped turrets, simple reticle and a more traditional scope, Meopta would probably be my first choice overall.

Illuminated scopes that have the entire reticle lit up are not that great in falling light conditions if your eyes are sensitive. I’d opt for illumination that is focused only in the very center of the reticle, you eyes aren’t drawn as much.

Agreed on the reticle illumination.

Had the opportunity to shoot a new 3-9 Leupold Firedot…man that thing was awesome at twilight with the red dot illuminated…has me debating going with a higher end Leupold with firedot.

I have not had the opportunity to experience a “newer” Trijicon scope, only my old accupoint from years ago, but it was awesome. No experience with Meopta either…will have to check one out.

The MOAR-T in the NF is great, only the center crosshair illuminates, not the rest of the reticle. That’s why I bought it over the other offerings in that type of scope. It’s not a magic optic though when it’s getting dark. With it and the Trijicon, I can sit on average 45 minutes after official sunset before it’s too dark to really make out anything with clarity. Both are still better than any Leupold, Weaver, Burris, Nikon etc that I have ever owned. Now, you throw in a good bright moon and it’s another story with either of them.

leadenwahboy, I think mainly the glass quality is the problem but the 9x isn’t helping either. I am using a Diamondback AR .223/5.56. The long distance low light is exactly what I want to improve on this set up.

If you are limiting yourself to a 1" tube, look on Natchez Shooters Supply and see if they have anymore Bushnell 4200’s left. Good glass, great low light. Meopta Meopro is another good choice. The Weaver Super Slam series is pretty good in low light, just make sure you get one with illumination because their reticles are very fine. Ziess Conquest HD is another option but you can get a Trijicon for the same money that is better in low light. If you step up to 30mm tube you open up a whole lot more options, not because the larger tube gathers more light, you just find better optics.

I’d look on the SWFA Sample List to see what they have used. They’ll have some premium optics at lower costs. Also, magnification doesn’t trump optical clarity. I’d rather have a 10X that was crystal clear than a 20X that was fuzzy with limited eye box. Go on Opticstalk.com, you can search and learn a lot over there. Leica introduced the E5, I believe, recently which is supposed to be a jam up optic that won’t break the bank.

The weaver super slam is the best scope I have ever owned in its price range, period. I have owned leupolds, vortex (never again), Nikon, and a few others and my main hunting rifles now have super slams on them. Putting another rifle together right now that’s going to get a night force or trijicon but if I was on a budget I would not hesitate to pick up another super slam. Here’s a link to the one I have on my 7mm-08, at that price you can’t beat it.

I have 3 superslam Euro 3x9x56. Excellent scope. I also have a superslam Euro 4x25x50. Love that too. Had all the others meantioned, and found these to be superior. And cant beat the price. I took salty dogs advice, and passed it on to salty849.
