Rifle scope suggestions

got a Browning xbolt 308 and need scope suggestions. I THINK I have narrowed down to a leaupold, Nikon monarch, or a zeiss terra. All relatively comparable except the zeiss is a 42 and the others 50. Thoughts?

Of those choices I’d take the Zeiss simply because I prefer my scopes as low as I can mount them on the rifle. 50s take a higher mount, and aren’t worth the extra height to me, for what little extra light they might allow. I have Leupold, Nikon, Bushnell and Burris scopes, all in the $400 to $500 range, with 40 m.m. objectives. I like the Burris Signature Select and Euro Diamond best. Have shot Deer with them when it was to dark to see the ground from a treestand…

I have a 3-9X40 Nikon BDC for .308 with rings if you’re interested.

The Ziess Terra is on par with a Nikon Prostaff or Redfield Revenge. It is outsourced parts assembled in the US under the Carl Ziess Optik monicker, I don’t even think the base lense is Ziess, the coatings are. IE they aren’t very good scopes, just command more money based on name alone. I’ve had enough issues out of Nikon products that I’ll never own another one as long as I live. Beware of a company that sells a ton of refurbished scopes, why weren’t they furbished the first time around.

Leupold has always made a quality scope all be it overpriced because of the name. My issue with the Leupold scopes I own is that they suck in low light unless you are spending $1k+ on them, at that point you can get something much better.

If you want to get a helluva scope at a lower cost buy a Weaver Super Slam, they are the equivalent of the VX-3 Leupold, Monarch 7, Ziess Conquest, etc at about 2/3 to 1/2 the price but perform better in low light. You can get them with 1" or 30mm tubes and all have dialable locking turrets. They come with and without illumination as well.

Sort of depends on your budget. If you want to get into a $1K or more scope, Trijicon Accupoint, Meopta Meostar R1 or R2, Swarovski Z3/Z5, Nightforce SHV or NSX etc. You may also want to look on the SWFA.com Sample List for slightly used scopes. You can pick up a deal on them many times like a Schmitdt and Bender, Leica, Kahles etc for $500-$1,000 off new. EuroOptik has the same type deals, you just have to look.

Crap glass gives crap results. Most 50mm scopes can be mounted on Medium or high rings. If you use a DNZ GameReaper it is a Medium. You need about the thickness of a dollar bill between the bell and the barrel. Most people and a lot of these shops mount scopes to dang high.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

This one right here, I have everything on your list except a terra and have heard not so good reviews about them. This weaver super slam has really impressed me the past 2 weeks, I love the pop up turrets, it is great at gathering light for a 1" tube, and the glass is very nice. Made in japan, not the Philippines like your other budget scopes. Im ordering another just to put up for another rifle im going to get in the not so distant future.

I started shooting with the Leupold VX-3L scope in 50mm. Because of the design it allows you to use low scope mounts. Very good low light performance. I believe they make the same style in 54mm. Certainly a lot of opinions on this subject. Makes choosing one difficult.

You can get everything under the sun for about any budget you have to spend on. There are certain options that give better light gathering, more eye relief and better eye box and exit pupil. Not one of them is perfect in every area but some are better than others.

It’s a shame that Bushnell discontinued the 4200 line of scopes, the 2.5X10X50 with the Ill #4 reticle and 30mm tube is one of the best pure hunting scopes I’ve ever owned. Fantastic low light gathering, fast, easy to see reticle, tough and economical at under $500.00. Not real great for precision range work but that is the tradeoff.
