Right Engine?

Greetings all. Looking to take the plunge on my first saltwater boat. I’m looking at a Grady White 268 with 2001 twin 200 Yamaha hpdi’s. I want to be able to work my way into getting the boat offshore, bottom fishing to trolling, and am curious if anyone can tell me what I should expect out of those engines on that boat?

Will be going out of Charleston and Edisto mostly. Looking forward to it.

Those engines are 15 years old! How many hrs? What kind of maintnance ? Might last another few years or might go tomorow! Goo luck!

So is the boat hull. I would be concerned about the deck, transom, stringers and fuel tank too. Most Grady’s I’ve worked on in that age range have had some serious issues. Spend a few hundred on a survey before you buy it.

450 hrs on the engines. I will get a survey done, as well as the engines gone through, before purchase. I am curious about the performance of those engines with that boat? Thanks.

MOTOR SHOULD BE PERFECT FOR THAT HULL
200 HPDI WITH 450 HOURS WOULDNT SCARE ME AT ALL
FUEL EFFICIENT RELIABLE MOTORS, JUST HAVE TEHM CHECKED BY A PROFESSIONAL PRIOR TO PURCHASE

I respect bp, larry and chris v.
They love doing what they do well and want nothing but the best for this website. Good guys. White hats.

Time for some due diligence.

I hope you get a heck of a steal from someone who treated her like his “baby”.

Thank you sir.

I would really be more concerned about the hull condition than the engines. Get a good hull survey.

Thanks all. I will have a full survey done for sure. Sounds like the engine size to boat is good to go. I appreciate all the ■■■■■■■■. This is a cheaper older boat, but will serve my needs till I use it enough to justify spending real money. However, it is certainly enough money to justify spending some good due diligence money on. Thanks again. I am enjoying this site so far and really appreciate the ■■■■■■■■.

Those engines are trouble personified. Probably the worst engine Yam has ever built. I wouldn’t touch that boat with twin 10’ poles. I wouldn’t buy them if they had 5 hours on them.

95% of the people I know who have had catastrophic failures with yams have been with HDPI’s. The other 5& are with 225 4 strokes

I have and use seven fiberglass boats I use reguraly! The newest one is a 1990 Carolina skiff and the oldest is a 70 Bertram. I use my 17’ 1971 whaler both in salt and fresh it has a 1983 merc 200 with a broken hr. meter stuck at 1836, the old motor is all that is left of my old 25’ Downeaster! Take care of your equiptment an it will take care of you! Good luck with the survey!!

you are almost correct the major issues have been witht he big block HPDI 250-300, not the 150-200

I agree bubba, and not disputing you expertise. Anything HDPI, regardless of which one, is a mess. If they were all that they would still make them. There is a reason you see next to zero of them on the water anymore

I have a couple friends that have been dragging shrimp nets with the 200 hpdis for years with no trouble thats about as much stress on one than anything.

Hoppy, I had a 2001 200 HPDI and it never gave me one bit of trouble until a log truck decided to rear end us last Labor Day.Can’t speak for everbody but mine was a great motor.

I’m sure you did and that sux! Whenever a manufacturer comes up with an unpopular, or unreliable design, there are always some engines that don’t fit the description and are “bulletproof”. I have a good buddy who has an E-rude Fict. Prob an early 2000’s model. It’s got some serious hours on it and that thing purrs like a kitten and runs like a banshee?!

If I’m not mistaken, all the high pressure injection engines were manufacturers attempt to bring technology of cleaner burning and better fuel economy to the outboard world. This was EPA mandated and sort of “the bridge” between traditional 2 strokes and 4 strokes. As High Pressure engines often proved problematic, complicated, high maintenance, and 4 strokes became lighter and more powerful, the HPDI’s, Optimaxes, Fict’s began to fall by the wayside. E-rude has that Etech thing. I have a few friends and acquaintances who have Etecs and they have either had catastrophic failures, or so many small recurring problems they just gave up on them and went back to Yams.

I’m a staunch Yam guy. If someone gave me an HPDI tomorrow morning, I’d have it for sale by lunchtime
