Right rod for line a counter

I got two new line counters and was wondering what rod to put them on, just thought I’d ask. Not looking for high dollar, relatively available. The white ugly stick striper rods?

I love the ugly sticks. Cheap and hold up to abuse. I had a silstar and it only lasted 2 months

Cant beat the white striper ugly stix. They work great for murray. I have switched to a heavy rod though when traveling to other lakes targeting big fish exclusively though. I still take the murray rods along for prefishing usually with smaller baits.

Run the black one’s on my Penn 330 GTI’s - have had them for 7 years now and love them. Best bang for your buck is uglysticks!

I am not really sure why you would need a different rod for a line counter reel, than one without one. What am I missing here?

Pull method works much better IMO. Count the pulls from the reel to the first eye on the rod for depth measurements.

I’m with Rick here. Any rod you get will be fine with a line counter reel depending on the application-- downrodding, pulling boards, trolling plugs and urigs, etc.
Whether or not the reel has a line counter is not the issue. Choose a rod based on what you will doing with it. Rick will tell you I have a variety of reels-- some with some without counters. What you’ll be doing with it is the determining factor in rod selection.

I’m sort of new to striper fishing, have gone a bunch, but not regularly. I’m trying to learn as much as I can from this board. I sort of didn’t really craft my question right. Also, assumed you would only really use a line counter for down rods and slow trolling. Thought maybe you’d want a stiffer or softer rod. I know the white ugly sticks are usually pretty soft, 7ft, medium flex. I appreciate all the help on this board from your guys who can dial it in. I am going to the lake in the am, not expecting much, but got to go to see.

Thanks,

Based on your response, you understand having the right tool for the job with respect to rods. A line counter can be advantageous in most fishing situations. For example, through trial and error, you can use one to determine how much line you should put behind a planer and duplicate it exactly once you get the fish dialed in. With or without a counter, the reel is simply a tool for storing and gathering line. The rod selection depends on the technique you’re using.

I am looking into buying some rod and reels for pulling Planer boards. Cables’s has the
driftmaster 3 combo for 59.99. I was wondering if any of you know if these reels are any good. Also what size reel and what action rod should I get? I will only use on Murray and Clark’s hill.
Thanks in advance

I assume you are referring to the Depth Master III combo’s. If so, my friend has six of these rods that are 7’6" Medium action, and they are too stiff. I would recommend the 8’6" Medium Light. It may be a little longer than you would prefer, but will be a much better Striper Rod.
