Put lines in a SLICK ocean at 6:15am. Things slarted off really slow. Lost what seem to be a tuna around 8:30. At 10 deep rod starts screaming and after a long run we have a nice hoo behind the boat. We look beside him and there is another bigger wahoo follwing him to the boat! We pitched him a bait but he wouldn’t bite.
Shortly after some good water started to push into 200’ that had about a 1.5 degree break and some weeds. Picked up a BFT off of it real quick.
Then a Mako nails a Rapla. We got him boatside and put a gaff in his head and tail. He sat moitionlees for 5 min or so while we cleared the extra fishbox to put him in. We moved the gaff from his rear and stuck it in the other side of his head to pull him in and he EXPLODED. Ripped free from both gaffs and took off. Finally we got him back and tail roped him and put him in the box. We went to ice him down 20 min later and he exploded again. Those things are dangerous.
Boated another wahoo that entagled 2 lines and forced us to hand line him the last 30ft and he cut the line as he came over the gunnel. The gaff was maybe 2" below the dorsal! Had another hoo sky on a lure but missed it.
Then we hooked up with triples on the way backs. 2 got cutoff and the third was a bonito that was being eaten by another Mako right behind the boat. We got a hook with a small piece of wire in him but he swallowed it too far and cut off.
I think it was just too nice out there yesterday for the tunas to bite good.
Just had the Mako for the first time. I was skeptical but it really was excellent. Soaked in soy sauce sauted in olive/sesame oil topped w/ ginger wasabi sauce. Similar in taste/texture to swordfish maybe?
I can second Juice’s comment. Was on the boat with him and ate the Mako tonight. Cooked the same way, just added a little spices to it. Very good eats.
…at 85% throttle is tame and only delivers 50% of the power. From 85% throttle to 100% throttle the thing takes off like a scalded cat being chased after by a dog and falling down stairs!!! Riding a 2stroke is no joke if you don’t know what you are doing.
